CS431 Lab 2

The document provides instructions for Lab 2 of CS 341 on introducing PC interfacing. The objectives are to learn about basic hardware ports and components in PCs, and get experience using lab tools like PCs, multimeters, protoboards, and resistors. Students will use mainboard ports and I/O cards, build a voltage divider circuit, answer lab sheet questions, and submit their work.

Lab2: Introduction to the PC Interfacing
Objectives:
- Know the basic hardware interfacing ports / components in PCs.
- Get used to the Lab Tools
- PC
- Multi-Meter < TA?
- Protoboard (breadboards) < TA?
- Resistors < TA?
Instruction:
- Part I : Using Mainboard / I/O cards
- Where are the hardware interfacing ports ?
- Turn off SAPC / don’t disassemble the machine / just find where the ports/components are
- Part II
- Voltage Divider Circuit
- Turn on SAPC / use the output power supply from PC / build your voltage divider circuit

Mission:
- Working as a team
- Answer the lab sheet questions
- Turn in lab sheet to TA

IC Chip Types
Integrated Circuit (IC) Chips have different types:
• DIP : Dual In Line Package

• SIP : Single In Line Package

• Surface Mounted:

MultiMeters

Electronic measurement
- Voltage DC/ AC ( V )
- Resistance ( Ohm )
- Current ( Amp.)
- Connection
- Connect the wires
- Black wire is connected to GND (ground) or COM (Common)
- Check Connection Test
- If you don’t know the range of the measured value
 start with the highest scale first.
- Make sure that you turn the knob to the right function.

Resistors
A resistor is a two-terminal
electronic component that
produces a voltage across its
terminals that is proportional to
the electric current passing
through it in accordance with
Ohm's law:
V = IR

Protoboards (breadboard)
• Protoboards are used to make/test an
electronic circuit.

A breadboard (protoboard) is a construction base for a one-of-

a-kind electronic circuit, a prototype. In modern times the term is
commonly used to refer to a particular type of breadboard, the
solderless breadboard (plugboard).

Because the solderless breadboard does not require soldering, it

is reusable, and thus can be used for temporary prototypes and
experimenting with circuit design more easily.
