Transformations

The document discusses different types of geometric transformations including translation, reflection, and rotation. Translation means to slide a shape in a direction without changing it. Reflection means to flip a shape across an axis or line. Rotation means to turn a shape either clockwise or counterclockwise around a fixed point. Examples are given of each transformation using a quadrilateral shape on a Geometer's Sketchpad software to demonstrate how the shape is moved without being changed.

Transformations
with Mr. Cruz

3rd Grade TEKS

6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical
process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and
three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their
properties. The student is expected to:
(A) classify and sort regular and irregular two-dimensional shapes
based on attributes using informal geometric language;
(B) distinguish between attributes that define a two-dimensional or
three-dimensional figure and attributes that do not define the shape;

What does Transformation mean?

To Transform means to
change and there are 3
different types of
transformations that we will
be discussing which are
Translation, Reflection, and
Rotation.

Transformation

When bumble bee

transforms(changes) he will
either transform to into a car or
a really cool robot
Whether he is in car mode or
robot mode he is still the same
bumble bee
If was to give you a shape like a
triangle and I was going to
transform it then it would
change from its original place.
Black triangle is the original and
the yellow triangles are the
places it moved
Just like bumble be transforms
the triangle transforms but its
still the same triangle

Translation
Translation means to slide
You can have a shape slide
side, right, left, up or down

Translation

This example shows the

quadrilateral translating
going to the right
It also shows the
quadrilateral translating
down

Reflection
When you reflect a shape all
you are doing is flipping it
from its original place.

Reflection

The black quadrilateral flips

to the other side of the
blue line

Rotation
When you rotate a shape
you are turning it either
clockwise or counter
clockwise

Rotation
This
Quadrilateral
is being
turned
clockwise
