Exam 1 (70/70) Blackbody Radiation

This document contains an exam with questions about blackbody radiation, the photoelectric effect, Compton effect, and pair production. The exam questions calculate things like: the number of photons emitted from a broadcasting antenna; the sun's surface temperature and power based on its wavelength of maximum intensity; Planck's constant and a metal's work function based on photoelectron energies; wavelengths and energies involved in Compton scattering and pair production.

Exam 1 (70/70)

Blackbody radiation
1. A 45 kW broadcasting antenna emits radio waves at a frequency of 4 MHz.
(a) How many photons are emitted per second? (3 pts)
(b) Is the quantum nature of the electromagnetic radiation important in analyzing the radiation emitted
from this antenna? (2 pts)
2. The wavelength of maximum intensity of the suns radiation is observed to be near 500 nm. Assume
the sun to be a blackbody and calculate
a) the suns surface temperature (3 pts)
b) the power per unit area emitted from the suns surface (3 pts)
c) the energy received by the Earth each day from the suns radiation (9 pts)
Photoelectric Effect
3. A metal surface illuminated by 8.5 x 1014 Hz light emits electrons whose maximum energy is 0.52 eV
The same surface illuminated by 12.0 x 1014 Hz light emits electrons whose maximum
energy is 1.97 eV From these data, find Planck's constant and the work function of the surface . (10 pts)
4. When light of a given wavelength is incident on a metallic surface, the stopping potential for the
photoelectrons is 3.2 V. If a second light source whose wavelength is double that of the first is used, the
stopping potential drops to 0.8 V. From these data, calculate
(a) the wavelength of the first radiation (5 pts)
(b) the work function and the cutoff frequency of the metal. (5 pts)
Compton Effect
5. A photon of energy 3 keV collides elastically with an electron initially at rest. If the photon emerges at
an angle of 60 degrees, calculate the kinetic energy of the recoiling electron. (10 pts)
6. Consider a photon that scatters from an electron at rest. If the Compton wavelength shift is observed to
be triple the wavelength of the incident photon and if the photon scatters at 60 degrees, calculate
(a) the wavelength of the incident photon (5 pts)
(b) the energy of the recoiling electron (5 pts)
7. Pair production (10 pts)
a. Calculate the minimum energy of a photon so that it converts into an electronpositron pair.
b. Find the photons frequency and wavelength.
