Transport Phenomena: DR Hii Ching Lik Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering

This module provides an in-depth understanding of heat, mass and momentum transport through demonstrations of their interdependencies and solving practical problems using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The module aims to bridge first year transport phenomena concepts with advanced topics and CFD. Key elements include transport mechanisms, continuity, dimensional analysis, turbulence, and CFD workshops using COMSOL software. Prerequisites are fluid mechanics, mathematics courses, and heat and mass transfer. Assessment consists of an exam and two courseworks.

Dr Hii Ching Lik

Department of Chemical &
Environmental Engineering

COURSE SUMMARY
This module provides a bridge between
heat, mass and momentum transport
The core of the module is to
demonstrate the interdependency of
these three and to solve practical
problems that arise in the industry
A simple yet powerful CFD package is
used to simulate transport problems
(prior knowledge of CFD is not
necessary)
2

PREREQUISITES

Fluid Mechanics
Engineering Mathematics 1
Engineering Mathematics 2
Heat and Mass Transfer

It also helps if you have strong

interest in computational methods
3

AIMS
To provide an in depth knowledge of heat,
mass and momentum transport that is
necessary in assessing, analysing and
developing chemical, biochemical and
environmental processes
This module fills the gap between 1st year
transport phenomena and the 4th year CFD
module while introducing the multiphysics
aspect of the discipline
The module will cover advance topics in
heat, mass and momentum transport
