Sample 1: Original Student Question

The document provides guidance to a student who is having trouble understanding how to determine the amount of time a cell spends in each stage of mitosis. The assistant explains that to figure this out, one needs to: 1) Look at a large number of actively dividing cells at random times 2) Classify each cell into the correct mitotic phase 3) Count the number of cells in each phase 4) Divide the number of cells in each phase by the total number of cells to calculate the percentage of time spent in each phase. An analogy is provided to help explain this - just as looking at random people would show how much time they typically spend at different locations, looking at random cells indicates how much

Original Student Question

I am having a hard time finding information of how long a cell spends in each stage
during mitosis. I get the whole mitosis part and can differentiate it with meiosis. I just
need more clarification on how to tell the amount of time they spend in each stage
(number of cells and percent of cells).
My answer
To figure out the percent of time the cell spends in each part of the cycle, you will need
to look at a number of cells and identify which phase each is in. To do this:
look at a bunch of actively dividing cells at a random time. (This is what the link does
for us - it has pictures of 36 cells)
identify which phase of the cell cycle the cell is in a (You will do this based on the
pictures in the link)
use this information to figure out what % of the time the cell spends in each phase.
(You will need to do math to do this).
The math: if we look at 50 cells and find that 40 of them are in interphase - then we
know that the cell probably spends most of its time in interphase (80%). We get to 80%
because (40/50)*100 = 80%If in the same set of cells 3 of them are in metaphase - then
we know the cell spends very little time in metaphase (6% of its time). (3/50)*100 = 3%
An analogy that may help - if we were to look at 50 people at random times, we would
notice that sometimes people would be at work, sometimes at home, sometimes at the
store, etc. How likely we are to catch them at any place tells us how much time they
spend there. So, out of the 50 random people at random times, if 40 were at work - then
we know people spend most of their time at work (way too much time, that would be
sad).
Let me know if you have other questions or if I can clarify this further.
Student Reply
Thank you so much for your help! I believe I got it. I basically just have to classify each
cell into the correct phase. Once I am done, I count the number of cells in each phase.
The last step would be dividing the number of cells in each phase by the total correct.

Original Student Question
Hi Suzanne,
I have a question regarding Part D. Your instructions (see below) read:
1. Which of the review questions (found at the beginning of this unit) do you feel you
understand the most completely?
By the beginning of the unit, do you mean the "did you know questions" at the beginning
of unit one on page 1, chapter 1 (see below) or something else?
"Scientists have discovered two planets about the size of Earth orbiting a distant star,
Keplar-20e and Keplar-20f. These planets may have environmental conditions that
could sustain life."
I'm confused.
Thank you!
My Answer
Excellent question!
The units refer to the material on Blackboard rather than in the book. Since students
have different options for textbook choices, I will not require specific content from any of
the books.
But, it probably would have been clearer to say "the review questions found at the
beginning of each week". The review questions are the second item in each week's

folder and are essential for the test. The tests are written using information from the
review questions and from the activities. So, the purpose of this assignment is to make
sure everyone has looked over all 4 review question documents in this unit.
Student Reply
Great, thank you!
So, I will chose a review question from one of the units. I print these at the beginning of
each unit to guide my studying, but I was confused because I thought it meant from the
book! Thank you for the clarification.
My Reply
That is exactly correct & you are most welcome :)
