This lesson plan is for a first grade reading/language arts class. The objective is for students to be able to identify and describe characters in a story. The teacher will review story elements, define characters, read aloud The Princess and the Pea, and have students raise their hands when they hear characters. Students will then independently create a character web by drawing a character from the story and writing four details about them. The lesson will conclude with students sharing one thing they learned about identifying characters.

Princess and the Pea to each student. I will then read the story The Princess and the Pea aloud. As I read I will ask the students to listen. Each time they hear a character they are to raise their hand. After the book is done being read, we will discuss when the students raised their hands and their reasons for doing so. The students will choose a character from The Princess and the Pea and create a web on that character. The students will draw a picture of the character in the middle of white paper. The students are to write 4 details of their chosen character.
(one detail on upper left, lower left, upper
right, and lower right sections of their paper) Closure
