Graphical Presentation of Data

A histogram shows the distribution of continuous data using bars of different heights, a frequency polygon connects points representing frequencies to show the shape of distributions, and an ogive displays cumulative totals over time using a line graph. Other graphs include line charts connecting data points over time, bar charts using lengths of bars to represent values, pie charts dividing a circle into proportional sectors to show parts of a whole, and pictographs using symbolic figures to represent statistical frequencies.

Graphical Presentation of Data

Histogram - is a graphical representation showing a visual impression of the

distribution of data. It is an estimate of the probability distribution of a
continuous variable and was first introduced by Karl Pearson.

Frequency polygon is a graphical device for understanding the shapes of

distributions.

Ogive (a cumulative line graph)- is best used when you want to display the
total at any given time.

Line chart or line graph is a type of graph, which displays information as a

series of data points connected by straight line segments.

A bar chart or bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with lengths
proportional to the values that they represent.

A pie chart (or a circle graph) is a circular chart divided into sectors,
illustrating proportion.

Pictograph is a way of representing statistical data using symbolic figures to

match the frequencies of different kinds of data.
