What are Interjections?

Interjections are words


used to express strong
feeling or sudden emotion
of the mind.
NOT IN BUSINESS WRITING
Avoid using interjections in
business writing.

Examples

Joy: Hey! Io!

Sorrow: Oh! Ah!

Wonder: Ha! Strange! Indeed!

Praise: Well done! Good! Bravo!

Pain or fear: Oh! Ooh! Ah! Eh! O dear!

Dread: Oh! Ha! Hah! What!

Interrogating: Eh? Ha? Hey?

Calling

aloud: Ho! What-ho! Halloo! Hoy! Ahoy!

Exultation:

Hurrah!

Laughter:

Ha,ha,ha; He,he,he;

Salutation:
Calling

Behold!

Ah! Aha! Huzza! Hey! Heyday!

Welcome!

to attention: Ho! Lo! La! Law! Look! See!

Stopping:
Parting:

Hold! Soft!

Farewell! Good-by! Good-day!

Knowing

or detecting: Oho! Ay-ay!

Surprise

with disapproval: Whew! Hoity-toity!

Yes , no , indeed and well are also


classed as interjections.
Examples:
~ Indeed, this is not the first time
the stand has collapsed.
~Well, it is 1a.m.Better go home and
spend time with the kids.

Some interjections are sounds.


Examples:
~Phew! I am not trying again.
~Humph! I knew that last week.
~Mmmm, my compliments to the chef.
