Grammar & Punctuation
All students should have taken at least one English class already. You need to use the skills obtained in
these classes when writing your laboratory reports. Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are
expected at all times and lack thereof will usually be penalized.
Introductions
The introduction is the beginning of the body of your lab report. This section should give the reader a
detailed background on the What and the Why of the experiment. Attempt to put into words your
response to the following questions. What was the purpose or objective of the experiment? Why was
the experiment conducted in a particular manner?
State Problem / Purpose
The objective is a concise statement in complete sentences outlining the purpose of the experiment.
The purpose section of a lab is where you tell the reader your reason for doing the lab in the first place
and briefly summarize any relevant background information about the experiment.
Materials
Materials can be bulleted list of all equipment used in the labs. Be thorough enough that someone else
could replicate this exact lab by using your lab report.
Procedure
List all of the steps in order that you took in the lab. Again be thorough enough that someone else
could replicate this exact lab.
Results
This is the core section of your lab report and before you begin writing it, you should gather together
any and all data and/or observations you made during the experiment. Your results should state only
what you found in your experiment, not what you expected to find or what you were supposed to have
observed.
Discussions
The discussion section is the place to reflect on your actual data and observations as they relate to the
experiment in a logical manner. You must write about your results in a way that describes how they
support or do not support the objective of the lab.
Conclusions and Summaries
As its name suggests, this section provides a recap to the reader similar to the introduction. This
section should not be longer that a few sentences and should reiterate the findings of your experiment.
