Surface Characteriz Ation Lab: Gregory Massey, Nicholas Leight, Roxanne Manger, Indushekhar Kumar, Brian Luria - 2015

The document summarizes an ISE 4500 Surface Characterization Lab. Students analyzed test samples to determine surface hardness and roughness. Measuring surface properties is important to ensure proper material performance under cyclic loading, friction characteristics, and consistent quality and assembly of consumer products. Hardness testing provides a quick way to check if manufacturing processes have produced materials with the intended strength properties.

Introduction
In this lab several test samples were analyzed to determine their surface
hardness and their surface roughness. The experience gained will help improve
future products to ensure that the material processing results in the expected
material properties. Measuring and controlling the surface roughness of a part is
critical to ensure proper crack resistance on parts that will endure cyclic loading. It
is also critical on surfaces such as bearings races or brake linings which see rubbing
or rolling action to ensure proper lifecycles and friction characteristics. Finally, on
many consumer goods the surface finish is critical as it is a mark of a high quality
part. For instance the screen of a cell phone must be extremely smooth to ensure a
crisp image is displayed. Additionally, if several components are to be assembled,
they must share very similar surface properties to ensure a consistent overall
product.
The hardness of a material is a quick, inexpensive and non-destructive
indication of a materials strength. As a result, the experience gained in this lab will
be used to help ensure that future manufacturing processes produce products with
the intended material properties. Many manufacturing processes such as casting or
forging can drastically alter the material properties of the material. To ensure the
finished part is safe, the parts are often heat treated to reinstate the intended
material properties. The hardness tests performed in this lab can be used to
provide approximate material properties for the finished part. This is critical to
ensure that the material is neither too brittle nor ductile for the intended
application.
