Keywords: Google Docs, Cloud Computing, Engineering Students, University of Uyo

Google Docs is a widely used cloud computing service that allows for hosted document editing over the Internet. Previous research has examined cloud computing in general but not student usage of Google Docs specifically in a university setting. This study analyzed engineering student usage of and opinions on Google Docs at the University of Uyo to determine factors influencing adoption, extent of usage, and constraints to effective use. Most students found Google Docs effective for schoolwork and suggestions were made to improve cloud computing service usage in the engineering faculty.

ABSTRACT

Cloud computing is a general term for delivering hosted services over the Internet. Google
provides a service called Google Docs, a widely used example of cloud computing. Even though
many studies have examined the overall concept of cloud computing, no previous research has
analysed students' usage and acceptance of Google Docs in a university setting.
The analysis of variability and standard deviation was used to guide my research in
examining what factors influence students to use Google Docs. And to assess the level of
familiarity and extent of usage of cloud computing services to see if they were related. Also, the
study was used to find out the percentage of the overall engineering students that actually make
use of the service and their opinions about the service. The constraints to effective utilization of
cloud storage and computing services were also discovered. Most of the students involved in this
study thought Google Documents was an effective tool for handling school work in the
undergraduate environment.
As the problems hindering the students from taking full advantage of Google Docs as a
cloud computing tool were pointed out, some possible solutions were suggested which could
largely improve the usage of cloud computing services in the engineering faculty of University
of Uyo.
