MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

Name: Yancey Mitchell

PART A: Describe how students could create and publish an original movie, audio file, podcast, or vodcast in order to achieve
required learning standards. Challenge: For an A provide an idea where the learning activity reaches a LoTi level 4a or
above. To do this you will have to design a project where students engage in higher-order thinking and publish their work to an
audience that will use or care about the results. Broad feedback for their work is also a great way to boost interest and
performance.
Grade Level: 9-12
Content Area: Chemistry
Technology Used (check all that apply): Movie Audio Podcast Vodcast Other: (list)
Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SCSh7. Students will analyze how scientific knowledge
is developed. SCSh1. Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and
skepticism in science. . L11-12RST2: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; summarize
complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but
still accurate terms. L11-12RST9: Synthesize information from a range of sources (e.g., texts,
experiments, simulations) into a coherent understanding of a process, phenomenon, or concept,
resolving conflicting information when possible.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will
students and teachers do? How will the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What
audience will use/care about the multimedia projects students are creating? How broad is this
audience? How will student work be assessed and by whom? Who will provide feedback to students
about their work? (Overview should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs) Students will research and summarize
a historical figure in the field of chemistry. Students will create a video that they will share with the class. This project will
be introduced near the end of the semester, and students will be challenged to incorporate what they have learned in class
into their presentations. Students will be given one week to complete this project. The finished projects will be shared with
other chemistry classes within the school. In this way, many students will benefit from the research projects. Additionally,
student videos will be posted on the class website. The teacher will assign a grade for the project based on information
covered, how information was assimilated with topics discussed in class and creativity. A couple of classes before the
project is due, there will be a work period where students can give each other feedback. This will enable students to think
about and improve their projects before presenting.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why?
Which indicators of Engaged Learning are strong and why? This activity represents a LoTi level of
five. Students research and present on a topic of their choosing. They utilize technology to
piece together their presentations. Also, their work is published on the class website.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could
the project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other
types of technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? Technology provides a valuable
tool because it enables the students to sculpt a finished project that includes information that is presented in an audio and
visual format. This activity could be performed without utilizing technology. However, students would not be as engaged.
Therefore, this exercise would not be as engaging for students.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether
in part or whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from
others. The video begins with a clip from an NPR podcast about Marie Curie. It was incorporated to provide a quick
overview of Marie Curie and her career. And, it provides some context for the images of Marie Curie. You can listed to the
full podcast and/or peruse additional information at www.npr.org.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet
safety and student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain
how youd minimize risks to students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and
follow school districts Internet Safety/Use Policy. I would minimize risks to student safety and privacy by
educating students who internet safety rules. Additionally, I would obtain parent permission before posting
representations of student work on the class website. Lastly, I would include no reference to a full identity of the students
and/or the location of the school.
