Fluid Mechanics: Tutorial: 1 Date: 24/06/2015

This document contains 8 problems related to fluid mechanics and capillary action. Problem 1 asks to calculate the shear stress on a plate given the velocity distribution. Problem 2 asks to determine the velocity of a plate pulled between two surfaces containing fluids of different viscosities. Problem 3 asks to estimate the viscosity of oil given the mass and velocity of a cylindrical body dropping through it.

FLUID MECHANICS

TUTORIAL: 1

Date: 24/06/2015

1. If the velocity distribution over a plate is given by u = 3/4y y2, where u is the velocity in
m/s at distance y meters above the plate. Determine the shear stress at a distance of 0.15 m
from the plate. Take the dynamic viscosity of the fluid as 0.834 Ns/m2.
2. A thin flat plate of surface area 7.5 m2 is pulled parallel and midway of two surfaces of a
confinement of 12 mm gap which contains an oil of dynamic viscosity 0.12 Ns/m2 on one
side and a liquid three times as viscous on the other side. If the force applied is 180 N.
Determine the velocity of the plate.

3. A sliding fit cylindrical body of 1kg mass drops vertically down at a constant velocity of 5
m/s. Estimate the viscosity of oil.

4. A 1 m2, 10 kg flat plate slides down a 30 inclined plane over a 0.1 cm uniform layer of oil
(=0.05 Ns/m2). Determine the steady state velocity.
5. Calculate the power absorbed by fluid friction in a thrust bearing consisting of a flat disc
10 cm in diameter placed at the lower end of a vertical shaft. The oil film is 0.25 mm thick
and the viscosity of oil is 1.3poise. The shaft rotates at 2000 revolutions per minutes.
6. A soap bubble 0.8 cm in diameter has a gauge pressure of 1 kN/m2 within it. Estimate the
surface tension of the soap solution.

7. Find the height through which water rises by capillary action in a glass tube of 2 mm bore
if the surface tension of water is 0.075 g/cm.
8. Two parallel plates separated by a distance of 1 mm are placed in water. How far the water
rises due to capillary action in the gap between plates. Assume surface tension of water as
0.073 N/m and angle of contact with plate as 20.
