Fluid Mechanics

A fluid mechanics tutorial document contains 5 problems: (1) Estimating the pressure in a reservoir from a piezometer reading of 50 cm rise and calculating the reading if the reservoir contained oil with specific gravity 0.8, (2) Estimating the vacuum at point A in an air pipe with a 10 cm manometer reading, (3) Calculating the difference in mercury columns h for a U-tube manometer, (4) Estimating the density of a metal that floats at the interface of mercury and water with 30% submerged in mercury and 70% in water, (5) Finding the weight of a uniformly sized floating body that is 3m x 2m x 1m with 0.6m depth

FLUID MECHANICS

TUTORIAL-2

DATE 04-07-2015

1. A single tube piezometer installed vertically on a reservoir containing water registers a rise
in its level by 50 cm.
(a) Estimate the pressure in the reservoir
(b) What would the piezometer reading be if the reservoir contained an oil sp. gr.0.8?
2.Estimate the vacuum at A in an air pipe shown if a water manometer with the other end open
to atmosphere reads a differential head of 10 cm.

3. For the U-tube manometer connected as shown in Figure below, calculate h, the difference
of mercury column in the two limbs.

4. A metallic body floats at the interface of mercury (specific gr.13.6) and water such that 30%
of its volume is submerged in mercury and 70% in water. Estimate the density of the metal.
5. A uniform body 3m long, 2m wide and 1m deep floats in water. If the depth of immersion
is 0.6m, then find the weight of the body.
