Term Two - Tessellations Project

Introduction
Tessellations is a branch of geometry that becomes particularly important in tilling patterns. Special
art designs also make use of the principles of tessellation. During this project you will be learning
and investigating some of the key concepts of tessellation as well as applying those concepts
through creative design.

GLOSSARY
Before starting any of the mathematical tasks following, you are to define each of the following
terms as they apply in geometry (you may explain just in words or also use diagrams to assist):
Tesselate
To cover a flat/plane surface by repeated
use of a single shape, without gaps or
overlapping.
Regular
All sides and angles are equal (referring to
polygons)
Irregular
An irregular is a polygon with different
lengths.
Quadrilateral
A quadrilateral is a a four-sided figure.
Pentagon
A pentagon is any five-sided polygon
whose internal angles in a simple
pentagon is 540.
Hexagon
A hexagon is a a plane figure with six
straight sides and angles.
Heptagon
A heptagon is a a plane figure with seven
straight sides and angles.
Template
A template is a a shaped piece of rigid
material used as a pattern for processes
such as cutting out, shaping, or drilling.
Vertex
A vertex is a a meeting point of two lines
that form an angle or the the point at which
an axis meets a curve or surface.
Octagon
An octagon is a a plane figure with eight
straight sides and eight angles.
QUESTION ONE
Construct one of each of a regular triangle, quadrilateral, hexagon and octagon using the
construction (with a compass) techniques. Then make a copy of each shape to use a
template in order to show which of the above shapes tessellates. (C1 8 Marks)
Use a protractor to draw one regular pentagon and one heptagon, showing clearly your
calculations of the necessary angles. Again, make a copy of each shape to use as a
template in order to show which, if any, tessellates. (C1 3 Marks)

1. An angle at a vertex must be a factor of 360 in order to tesselate because if you add up all the
angles of a shape together, if they are not 360, they will leave gaps and not form a full turn. All
angles must add up together to be angles at a point, in order for a
shape to tessellate.

QUESTION TWO
Show that any irregular quadrilateral will tessellate by cutting out the following shape
and tessellating it on a sheet of A4.

Explain how the angle sums will guarantee that it tessellates and show clearly how to
arrange each successive quadrilateral in order to make it do so
(C2 5, C3 5 marks)

quadrilateral which if all angles are
added up together, will result in the
total sum of 360.

QUESTION THREE
a) More advanced tessellating shapes can be created by cutting out a shape from
one side of a tessellating shape and adding it to another. Again by cutting out the
following shapes and tessellating them on sheets of A4, determine which tessellate
and which dont. Show enough to make it clear and for those shapes that dont,
show clearly where they fail.

b) Now create 2 of your own tessellating shapes; one with straight edges, one with
some curves. Show how you have transformed your starting shape through a series
of sketches and show on a sheet of A4 that each shape does tessellate.
