I must admit, you really

A BETTER MAN

Ive been collecting FHM for

a few months now. I wanted
to start it in 2008 when I
turned 18. However I was
still studying then and could
not afford to buy regularly.
Now that I have a stable job,
I have started my collection.
I hope you will give me an
opportunity to be featured in
your magazine. More power
to FHM.

My husband is half-Filipino
and half-German. He
has been collecting FHM
since 2004, asking also
his Pinoy friends to buy
a copy for him every time
they are in the Philippines.
I really want to surprise
him as a late 7th wedding
anniversary last March 4
and a birthday present last
April 15. My husband will
be so happy. A published
letter in your rag will be a
dream come true for him.
Heres my photo with my

f youre seeking sexy, the

dance floor is a tried-andtested placeworn down
nightly under the heels of
toned, tightly wrapped bodies
and the static feet of men too
afraid to approach. However,
just like too much pounding
bass, we eventually get tired
of the bountiful sights and yearn for
something else. How about hot women
gyrating to the music of an equally
sexy performer? Thats next-level stuff.
Billboard dance chart-topping artist
Erika Jayne makes music to move, but
were perfectly content with sitting
still and watching her do it.
Nowadays, the term performer
covers a whole spectrum of talents.
How would you categorize yourself?
Im a singer-dancer. Ive been one all my
life, thats what I do. Im a performer at
heart.
Every performer has a special crowd
moment. Whats yours?
I think the thing that sticks out to me
the most is when the crowd is into it.
Every city has great people, but some
are just more electric than others. I love
it when people are singing backthats
the best part of it. And about a year ago,
I was performing in San Francisco, in
a nightclub, in the middle of a number,
I looked down and this girl had taken
off her clothes completely. She was
standing there naked in the front row!
I was shocked! I was, like, Am I really

seeing that? Am I drunk? I dont know

what she was on but it must have been
really good!
Did you stare?
I did, ha ha! I kept going obviously but
I was most definitely looking back to
see what she was doing. She couldnt
care less! She was having a great time.
She was feeling the music, the show,
herself!
And youve recently made your mark
here in the Philippines.
Ive performed at Universe and I shot
my music video You Make Me Wanna
Dance last Junein Chinatown, on
the hottest day of the year! It was
scorching but it was great. I thought
I was going to die, ha ha! Id never felt
heat like that in my life and Ive been
to the Middle East! But its a great
place. Ive been treated with nothing
but respect and warmth.
Is it the tropical sun?
Oh, it was so hot we couldnt do it
under the sun, hell no, ha ha! We
shot one full night in Chinatown and
another night in Greenfield.
Were you wearing something heavy?
Nothing. Just kidding! A black jersey
with some shorts! But Id do it again in
a minute.
And that brings us to this shoot
where you, in fact, wore nothing at
some point.
I think you always want to push it and
get new looks in. I got to show off my
super sexy side and thats never a bad
thing! And with such a talented group
of people too!

Do you even have that other side?

Every girl has a non-sexy side. When
Im not performing, Im in sweats, a
T-shirt, no makeup, and a ponytail!
Has the definition of sexy changed
for you?
Its confidence. Being comfortable in
your own skin and being comfortable
with who you are. I like to push
sexya lot of people dont. Its
comfortable for me and may not be for
others. You have to find what you like,
and when a woman is confident thats
the sexiest part.
Does it come with a Eureka Im hot!
moment?
I think some days youre more
18 FH M MAY 2015

confident than others, some days I feel

like I can conquer the world, some days
Im very vulnerable and I get scared. It
also comes from liking yourself; if you
do then you can be confident.
Do you compare yourself to other
women?
I dont compare myself to other
women. There are lots of different
forms of beauty, you know, theres
beauty everywhere. I just happen to
be over-the-top, super sexy, push it all
the timethats just my thing, but that
doesnt make it the only way to go.
But physically you are definitely
blessed.
I have big boobs and a big butt, lots
facebook.com/FHM.ph

of blonde hair and a big smile, and I

think they get me to a lot of places,
ha ha!
Its not often we get ladies who so
readily acknowledge their assets;
thats refreshing to hear. Do you have
a different take on how men should
approach sexiness themselves?
Whats handsome to me is masculinity.
Not necessarily being super muscled,
its also confidence as welljust
knowing what youre doing! And
sometimes you have to be your own
cheerleader if you dont have one. You
have to convince yourself. You have to
be your biggest fan. FHM

BALIKBAyAN UNLI-CALL

My guy had no idea I was

arriving two days earlier from
my assignment in Malaysia.
I wanted to go straight to
his pad to surprise him so I
got myself a taxi and headed
straight there. I teased him
over the phonetold him I
was in the bathtub and that
I was thinking of him. He
suddenly called and started to

no idea how to respond to the
dirty things he was saying to
me since the taxi driver would
overhear me if I did. My replies
to him were very distant. He
noticed this and got angry at
me. He became paranoid and
aggressive. He asked whether
there was anyone with me
at my apartment. I could tell
that he was pissed because
I was giving him blue balls:
Sisimulan mo ako tapos hindi

the phone.
I arrived at his place after

guards recognized me so they
didnt stop me from going
upstairs. I sneaked into his
room and heard the shower on
inside his bathroom. I thought,
what an obedient boy. I opened
the door and found him
already pleasuring himself. He
was being naughty; he started

I got down on my knees and
continued where he left off.
While I was sucking him

coutries. Let our players serve as
models that we can aspire to be.
Do you think we can be
contenders for international
titles outside of Asia?
Jeff: I feel that we can be
real contenders for the world
championships. We were just one
or two plays away from beating
the highest-ranking teams. It isnt
because of talent either; its more
on lack of experience.
Elvis: Maybe less politics in
sharing players with the national
team. Hindi porket magkakalaban
sila sa PBA hindi na sila pwede
magsama sa Gilas. Minsan lang
ako makaranas ng lahat ng
katabi ko nag-chi-cheer for the
same team. Kaya sana hindi nila
ipagdamot sa mga Pilipino ang
nararapat para sa kanila!
How about Manny in the PBA?
Jeff: Give the man the title. Let him
coach but dont let him play.
Elvis: Idol ko kasi si Manny eh.
Its his choice. For me, hes the
epitome of BuhayBasket. Hes
risking his name for his basketball
dreams. Hayaan na natin si Manny.
How will you keep up
with the exciting future of
Philippine basketball?
Jon: Para kaming magiging
queens of all media. The Kris
Aquinos of basketball. Yun na yung
bago naming tag-line sa site. Ang
lala siguro nun! Pero seryoso, as
the game evolvesthe people, the
fansthey evolve as well.
Enzo: We want to be part of that
future. Thats why BuhayBasket
exists. Were just trying to build a
community that can spread the
love of the game even more.

You gents have gotten a glimpse

of her on season 2 of Protg: The
Battle for the Big Artista Break,
where she showed off her inherent
potential to entertain, but eventually
lost the competition to another female
hopeful. A lot of you have witnessed
her insane, eye-popping dance moves
with fellow Bubble Shakers Sam Pinto,
Andrea Torres, and Max Collins on
Bubble Gangwere finally 4/4 in
landing the sketch comedy shows
resident face-melters. And if youre
as hot-blooded as we are here at FHM
HQ, youve likely cyber-stalked her
Instagram account (@iamarnyross)
for sweet bikini selfies and sweaty
#beastmode workout videos.
Despite the Dasmarias, Cavite
natives presence on television and
online media, theres still much to
learn of our current dance diva. One,
she considers the rest of the Bubble
Shakers her super-friendsher term,
not ours (you can imagine what those
sleepovers look like). Two, her mother
is a former Police Senior Inspector you
wouldnt want to slight. And three, her
amiability and warm vibe are just as
equally endearing as her modelesque
stature and A-list beauty.
She willingly shared all these with
us, with a quick lesson on booty shaking
for good measure. And the best thing
about our memorable time swapping
stories and hanging out with this soonto-be FHM favorite: she did all this under
the heat of the sun, in the tiniest tank
tops and the skimpiest of swimsuits.

People now know you as a Bubble

Shaker on Bubble Gang, but you
broke into the showbiz game via
the reality show Protg. Do you
remember what the audition was
like? What exactly did you have to
do to land that gig?
Merong hosting spiels na binigay
sa amin at pinaarte rin kami sa
stage ni Direk Gina [Alajar], but the
talent I prepared for that day was
my dancing. Yun talaga kasi yung
hilig ko. I started on season 2 of the
reality show; the first season was a
singing competition, pero yung sa
amin parang StarStruck. We used all
kinds of talents: dancing, singing,
acting. I auditioned like everyone
else. Isa ako sa mga swerteng napili
ni Direk Gina.
Did you undergo any formal
training to become a dancer?
Nung high school ako, I didnt know
anything about dancingas in
parehong kaliwa yung paa ko! But
when I entered college in La Salle
Dasma, they had an official dance
group called Lasallian Pointes n
Flexes Dance Company. I danced for
them for four years. Our training
was almost every day and we had
rehearsals for every dance. I was also
able to finish college because of the
group. I became a scholar through
my performing arts.
What part of your body do you like
to shake the most?
My hips. There are a lot of moves a
dancer can do with the hips. Its also

the most enjoyable part to shake!

I remember when I was still in
Protg, I enjoyed every challenge
that was given to me. Sinasapuso
ko talaga yung sayaw kasi ang
galing nung choreographers and I
want to do them justice. When the
audience appreciates my dancing,
its a different feeling all together.
So do you believe that great
dancers also make great lovers?
Siguro kasi mas experimental
kaming dancers.
Experimental in what way?
Kasi siyempre ang dancers, we
like to move, move, move. And
that movement is done with grace,
so siyempre mag-e-enjoy yung
partner. Ha ha!
What is it about dancing that
ignites a fire in you?
I started to join pageants in high
school and tuwing may talent
competition, nahihirapan ako
mag-isip ng talent ko. Nagulat
ako na marunong akong sumayaw
when I got into college. I realized
then that everything could be
learned. I told myself that if I let
myself learn and if I work hard
enough, Id be able to move my
body for dancing. It became my
passion. Iba kasi pag nagsasayaw
akothats how I express myself.
Thats why I fell in love with it.
Thats why even up to now, I do it
for a living as a Bubble Shaker on
Bubble Gang. Im happy to still be
dancing.

Youve been with Bubble Gang for

about a year now. What has the
experience of working with some
of the industrys best and funniest
been like? Are you guys just
constantly laughing your asses off
on set?
Before, I thought that the cast of
Bubble Gang was constantly going
through workshops. Siyempre
mabigat kaya magpatawa ng mga
tao. Pero nung pumasok ako, nagulat
ako na sobrang light lang ng feeling
sa taping. Every taping is a learning
experience. Natututo ka sa mga
ginagawa nina Kuya Bitoy and Ate
Peachy [Rufa Mae]. Someone once
asked me why Bubble Gang has lasted
so long, and I believe its because of
the family within the show. Lahat
kami parang magkakapatid. Everyone
bonds while on the set.

Whats the best advice youve gotten

so far from one of your more veteran
cast mates?
Dont overthink or dont think too
much while delivering the script. May
tendency na mawala yung punch
line if you do. Dapat bitawan mo siya
na parang wala lang. It should be
natural so people will be able to feel
that its funny. Hindi dapat forced,
yung tipong tumawa kayo kasi
nagpapatawa ako. Thats what I
learned from Kuya Bitoy. They say
that if youre not a comedian, wag
mong ipilit. Normal yun na lalabas. It
also helps that the script calls for two
people, may kabatuhan ka. Its during
the interaction that I pick up tricks of
their trade.

You were pretty game for anything

in todays shoot. Did you apply that
dont overthink things advice? Did it
help you conquer your initial fears of
baring yourself for the camera?
Actually, I think I was over-thinking
too much for this shoot! Ha ha! I wasnt
able to apply the advice I was given.
Honestly, at first, I was so scared to do
the shoot. Hindi ko alam kung paano ko
sisimulan and kung malalampasan ko
ba ito. Pero nung naging komportable
na ako sa teamwith the photographers,
makeup artist, stylist, and all of you
from FHMI was amazed. The team was
so welcoming. Ang babait ninyo talaga.
There was no pressure and nagtiwala
kayo sa akin so my confidence was
boosted.

We try our best. But we think it was

actually your being a dancer that
got us the best poses.
Mas flexible ako dati, but it really
helped. I learned that when posing,
your feet always need to be pointed.
Its the same in dancing, especially
in jazz. Kung hindi ako marunong
sumayaw, baka naging matigas din
yung katawan ko sa pag-po-pose
today.
Sam Pinto, Andrea Torres, and Max
Collins have all been FHM cover
girlsall the Bubble Shakers are
now accounted for. Did any of the
girls offer you pointers on how to
work with us?
A week before this, I told them, Girls,
meron akong ibabalita. I need your
help. I messaged them on Viber and
told them that I was doing the May
cover of FHM. Sobrang supportive

ng Bubble Shakers and ng Bubble

Girls. Ang hindi lang nakaalam ay
ang Bubble Boys, ha ha! Kasi wala
akong lakas ng loob sabihin sa boys.
Max and Andrea were really helpful
because they had just done their
covers. They told me, Mars, kaya mo
yan! Malalampasan mo rin yan. Nagwo-work-out ka naman! They told
me I was ready and that FHM sees
my potential so I shouldnt waste the
opportunity. Basically, they told me to
just give my best.

Are the Bubble Shakers BFFs

outside of the show?
Super! We are super-friends! Im so
thankful that I have a group like this
that I can call friends as well. Every
taping, were always excited dahil sa
mga kwentuhan. We get to have our
girl-talk. Now that were on break
from taping, we actually plan on
going out.
What is it that the Bubble Shakers
do when theyre not gyrating their
hips for the Bubble Gang audience?
Please say pillow fights in silky
lingerie.
We go out to eat pizza and pasta! Ha
ha! Kwentuhan lang din. Sometimes
we grab coffee, too!

oss
R

Lets play a little game. Since you seem to
know your Bubble Shaker girls quite well,
who do you think is the wildest among them?
Ha ha! Oh my God! Because she just did her
cover and it really made a boom and everyone,
including myself, was surprisedI would
probably have to say Andrea. She can handle that
sort of sexiness. Shes so brave. And you can see,
from her braveness came something great.
Now, who is the funniest? Which Bubble
Shaker makes you laugh the most?
That would be Sam. Mahilig kasi siyang tumawa.
Her laugh is so cute and infectious. Masayahin
siyang tao and mahahawa ka talaga sa kanya.
Laging good vibes. Shes always so positive.
What about the smartest? Whos the brainy
one of the bunch?
Thats Max. Everyone is smart, but Max
has a different personality. Before she does
something talagang pag-iisipan niya muna.
Shes the one who gives me advice all the time.
Lagi ko siyang nilalapitan and shes the same
with me. All her advice, her words of wisdom,
theyre really helpful.
Okay, now your turn. If you could choose an
adjective to best describe yourself within the
Bubble Shakers group, what would it be?
Im the sweetest! They always tell me that.
How do you show your sweetness to the other
Bubble Shakers?
Im very expressive when it comes to being
thankful na nandiyan sila. Mahilig kasi ako
magsabi ng I love you. Even with my girl
friends. Im always the one saying sorry or
thank you and I like putting in some effort
when it comes to friendships.
Are you the same when it comes to a
romantic partner? Are you the sweet one in a
relationship or do you prefer being spoiled?
When it comes to relationships, mas gusto ko
yung ako yung spoiled. When it comes to a
partner, gusto ko yung guy na may gustong
marating sa buhay. Someone who knows what
he wants. I want my future with him to be
secure. He should be able to handle me, take
care of me, and deal with my mood swings. He
needs to understand my work and make time
for me.
Those are all legitimate qualities, but does he
get extra points if hes an amazing dancer too?
Hindi naman! Ayoko ng parehas kami nang
hilig. I want someone who has different interests.
Dancing is already my world so I want to explore
another world. Ito nang ginagawa ko eh. So for
example, I date a businessman, then I want to
learn more about business. I want to constantly
learn. If were into the same things, it wont be
interesting.
We hear your mom is a former policewoman.
What was she like when you were growing up?
She just retired. Sobrang strict! Especially when
it came to boys, ha ha! Bawal manligaw, kundi
babarilin! Ha ha! My mom was very vocal about
having no boys courting or coming over during
those days. I became kind of a late-bloomer
because of it.

Im not the typical girl who likes to
go out every night. Hindi ako mahilig
gumimik. Hindi rin ako umiinom.
Wala akong vices. I dont smoke. But
then, ang dami ko ring hindi naexplore.
Did this cause you to go through
a rebellious stage during your
younger years?
No, I didnt rebel, but I became curious
at times when my friends would go
out and party. I never got a chance
to experience that. But its also good
because I didnt become fond of these
things. That was the advantage of

having a strict mom. She let me know

what my limitations were and kept me
from anything that could provoke me
into doing something wrong.
Youve got Bubble Gang, and now an
FHM cover. You have a fiercely loyal
fan basewhat do you think is the
next step in your career?
After Protg, I got some supporting
roles in TV. Siyempre, as an artist,
pinapangarap kong maging lead.
After this, sana mas makilala ako
at magkaroon pa ako ng show aside
from Bubble Gang. Kung maging
lead man ako, thank you Lord! Its a
blessing. But thats hard and I want to
be trained to be a lead actress before
taking on the challenge.

But right now, its all about dancing.

If I never learned how to dance,
I wouldnt be in showbiz. In this
business, you need talent. Im really
thankful that I discovered my passion
for dance. Its from there that I
learned I could be an artista, with
the help of the talent show Protg,
of course. Im really thankful for my
dancing talent and thats why to this
day, I utilize it as much as I can.
Finally, most men cant dance to
save their lives. What tips can you
give a man when it comes to being
confident on the dance floor?

Economics and natural selection may have screwed your advantage

when it comes to attracting the opposite sex, but heres where a little
smarts and a little help from science comes in
WORDS: KHYNE PALUMAR

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR OVULATING FEMALES

In the five- to seven-day window that fertile women
are fast approaching or actually laying their eggs,
female pheromone receptivity/responses change from
negative to neutral, her libido spikes, and your once
funky-smelling private radius becomes biologically
okay.
Real-world application:
Maneuver dates and engagements when shes ovulating.

How to tell: shes bloated, flushed, and literally hotter than

usual (rise in body temp). Or by decidedly developing a
semi-stink, then invading her private space and asking,
Mabaho ba ako? If she says no, then she might be.
Will it work?
A by-and-large hit-and-miss affair that youre welcome to
self-experiment with women who havent menopaused.
No harm in living dangerously.

TAKE MATING CUES FROM DARWIN

Never mind if you did or didnt buy the idea that we were descended from
fishes, saging, and apesit was after all, the same Charles who pointed
out that deliberate mate selection meant its the female species who are
charged to pick which member of the opposite (or same) sex they screw,
not the other way around. That bit could be true. To grossly summarize the
English naturalists sexual selection theory, there are two ways the male
species gets laid:
1 By killing off competing males, or emerging as the winner in a scuffle
between rivals
2 By parading or exaggerating natural-born or world-acquired assets, aka
peacocking it
Real-world application
But because killing people for a screw isnt on top of your agenda, and
neither are looks nor flashy thingsthe smart route is to straddle safely
in the middle: pick a skill youre barely or really good at, like fastest beerand-burger downing time (covers peacocking), then find a doubtlessly
bano rival, or pretend-bano wingman to challenge to a throw down
(covers the combat bit). Make sure women are watching, and make sure
you win.
Will it work?
It could actually, says FHMs former love guru Abby Poblador.
Yung pagpapansin in itself as a form of introducing yourself is not bad,
because if I dont know you, then paano ka na? Doing something like this,
something corny or over-the-top, makes you memorable. Abby adds
you can use this to establish an introductory takeoff point, and then
build from there.

SWEAT CALCULATINGLY
To settle the amoy-lalake-is-good-because-it-turnsher-on debate: androstenol, a hormone in fresh
male sweat does spike female libido and makes you
attractive to females. But androstenone, produced
after pawis is oxidized, creates B.O. and repels her.
Additionally, research group Social Issues Research
Center headquartered in the UK says androstenol
(the likable part of sweat) can only be whiffed at a
distance of 18 inches.
Real-world application
Run up and down a flight of stairs or do jumping jacks
until the first sign of a treacle, then position pawisan
body part (ideally arms or batok) less than two feet
away from target. Alternately, accidentally purchase any
of the creepy, dosed beta-androstenol spray brands that
promise instant sexual charisma, peddled on Ebay.
Will it work?
If biochemistry and biology are to be believedyes.
Although on paper, and in actual practice: Medyo
nakakatawa ito ah, says Abby.

MALE HELP, ASSEMBLE!

Finnish evolutionary biologist Markus Rantala says

the same parts of your pawis work positively with the
same sex, too, egging males to cooperate with fellow
males in a social setting. Meaning a sweaty kargador
may get extended help from a non-sweaty male
kargador because its the other guys job to help out,
or because he got a whiff of androstenone.

GUIDE TO BAKING
Its happened: baking, long considered the preserve of depressed housewives,
has finally been recognized as manly. Come with us as we get to grips with the world of
fiery ovens, crunching crusts, and floury buttocks
Photography: Dan Matthews Words: Chise Alcantara, FHM UK

BAKING BREAD:
THE BASIC PROCESS
MIXING Combining all your ingredients
in a bowl. The flour, yeast, salt and butter
are going to do some really awesome
things together.
KNEADING Pressing and pulling the
dough. There is an art to this. An art you
should learn.
PROOFING Letting the dough rise like
a glorious, sludgy phoenix.
BAKING Sticking it in a nice hot oven
(usually about 104C) for 30 to 40
minutes.
DRY AS A DESERT
Every self-respecting baking man should
treat his ingredients like his womenhe
should be able to keep them moist. There
should be no direct contact between yeast
and salt as this will kill the yeast, says
Chef Jun Jun De Guzman, Yummy
magazine contributor and head pastry
director and instructor at the Center for
Asian Culinary Studies. And be careful
with adding too much flour as that will
cause the bread to be tough and hard. If
you follow these tips, your bread (and your
women) will be gentle, soft and not dead.

THIS WILL BE YOUR

BEST BUDDY

A good mixer makes the mixing part of your

baking odyssey less of a toil and more a
leisurely, almost mindless activity.

Where the
magic happens

MIXMASTER, BAKE FASTER

The first part of the processmixing the

basic ingredients togetheris easier to
screw up than most people realize.
Segregate all wet ingredients from all
the dry ingredients, says Chef Jun Jun.
Make sure [both sets of] ingredients are
properly mixed. Butter or fat should be cut
in or rubbed into the dry ingredients. This
is to make sure it mixes properly with the
wet ingredients and so that everything will
have a uniform color.

AFTER-OVEN LOVIN

You thought that the moment youd

taken your creation out of the oven, it was
all over? Not so fast. Good things come to
those who wait. Let it rest for a while.
Cuddle with it if you want. The size of the
bread must be double [after resting], and
the dough does not move when it is poked
or touched, Chef Jun Jun says. Premature
fiddling around with your bread could
cause it to not rise. You should know that
when a thing gets bigger, then its
probably getting ready. The not moving
when poked or touched, thats probably a
whole other story. Maybe you should have
that checked out.

A FEW THINGS YOU KNEAD TO KNOW

Pushing and pulling your dough about is perhaps the manliest part of baking. With all the
crushing blows the dough would receive, you can probably expect some pandesal to show
up on your stomach as well.
Youre basically fighting your food like how a Kung Fu master would defeat his martial
arts nemesesOpen Palm Style. Dont kid yourself into thinking you can just wing it. It takes
dedication and discipline to make that dough submit. Its an art, pummeling your paste. With
a continuous open-palm scraping-moving motion you should be done [kneading] in 10 to
20 minutes, depending on the amount and type of bread being made, says chef Junjunf.
Wax on, wax off; knead on, knead off, young disciple of the bread.

THE HOUR IS
FLOUR
LOOK LEGIT IN THIS

Stomping around your kitchen, throwing

up white clouds of flour, and pummeling
dough is hard work. But you can still look
badass while youre at it. Wear an apron
that tells any visitor to your baking lair that
you are the man and you are definitely in
control. Even when youre holding a tray of
dainty cupcakes.

THE
PERFECT
WHITE
LOAF
(IS PRETTY EASY)
This is where it all begins. You always hopefully think that your first will also
be your last. Youll be holding it, warm and fragrant, in your hands, and youll be
happy. But its when you get this close that youll be able to notice all the things
that just didnt work out. And suddenly, things just fall apart. Then youll think,
What could I have done different? Thats when you know that its really time to
let go.
And youll make another one, and hope that you wont make the same
mistakes as last time. Loaf is one of the easiest breads to bake, but also very
tricky. Chef Jun Jun says: Its a basic bread recipe, and the trick to it is to bake
it in a loaf pan that has a cover, and let it rise until it nears the ream or the cover
of the container. Many people dont consider this tiny detail important and that
leaves them with an over-the-top, broken, lousy-looking bread. Be smart and
listen to the pros to stop wasting time and precious ingredients baking a simple
loaf. Remember guysnasa huli ang pagsisisi.

GO TO BROWN TOWN
Dont be afraid of browning your loaf. One
thing people are always terrified of is a little
bit of color. They freak out and whip it out the
oven. Dont. You want a lovely, crispy crust.

NOT ALL CAKES NEED ICING

INTRODUCING MONKEY BREAD

Contrary to popular belief, there are no bananas (and/or monkeys) in monkey bread. But
according to Chef Jun Jun, The best-tasting ones are usually dipped in syrup and then dusted with
nuts and chocolates. So why is it called monkey bread? If you look at it closely, you can see how
the small shaped bread piled together looks a lot like a bundle of bananas. You usually eat it by
picking at it like monkeys would do with banana bundles. Its cinnamon-dashed crust makes it look
really homey, it smells wonderful, and has such an addictive taste thatll make you go bananas for
more. Sorry, we just had to.

WHAT THE HELL

IS SOURDOUGH?

Most bakers, amateur or

professional, have a
love-hate relationship with
this. Its kinda special,
because its a mixture of
wild yeast taken from
different mixtures of flours.
Like your ex-girlfriend, its
difficult to manage because
it gives a sour taste to
breads, which makes it
difficult to balance out the
taste of the bread and leaves
the crust with a darker
color, according to Chef Jun
Jun.

EGGS ARE NOT COOL

Another common
misconception is that eggs
should be refrigerated. Luckily,
Chef Jun Jun sets us straight:
For baking, eggs should be
placed at room temperature
before using. It will give proper
volume and proper consistency
to the baked product.

GET READY TO MILK EM

According to Chef Jun Jun,
milk is commonly used when
baking softer breads to bring
out better flavors and
highlight the golden brown
color of the bread.

twitter.com/fhmphil

fhmphilofficial

DONT LEAVE IT OUT TO

DRY OR TO WET?
WAIT, WHAT?

Keep an eye out for your

dough. Chef Jun Jun reminds
us that the presence of too
much moisture or air around
the bread will cause the dough
to dry out a bit. Covering the
dough with film or a slightly wet
rag are a few solutions to
remedy this problem. Just
keep an eye on it.

are harder to shape than you think. Thankfully,
Chef Jun Jun shows us the master-class
secrets of folding these delicious bad boys.

Well, that actually doesnt sound so hard. There

BAMBOO V BAMBOO

1994 Rivermaya

1993 A certain Bamboo

Maalac was recruited
into Rivermaya. Prior to his
entry, the band was known
as Xaga, a show band-ish
rock band managed by
Lizza Nakpil and direk
Chito Roo. Together with
Nathan Azarcon, Mark
Escueta, Perf De Castro,
and Rico Blanco, theyd
play long sets at clubs
like Faces, and would
eventually write their own
songs.
VIBE: Its
Bamboos obvious
passion and lust
for music that draw
us in. Whether
hes doing a
classic Rivermaya
or wilding out his
comeback tracks,
were sure to sing
(and jump) along.
While we liked that
angsty look of the
self-confessed
introvert, were
not complaining
that we see him
smiling more often
nowadays.

HAIR: Its
undeniable that
Bamboo set the
trend: the now-cool,
then-tacky man
bun, the Bieberesque waxed do,
and the neatly
coiffed mane that
even Vice Ganda
unapologetically
wears. But what
he really rocked:
his kalbo phase

2004 Bamboos debut

album As the Music Plays
was released, followed by
Light Peace Love in 2005
and We Stand Alone

2003 Bamboo won

his first Vocalist of the

2002 Bamboo returned

to the country and
formed Bamboo with ex

1998 At the
tail end of a
Rivermaya tour
across the US
and Canada,
Bamboo decided
to call it quits
with the group
and stayed in
Los Angeles.

1997
Rivermaya
released
Atomic
Bomb,
which would
become
Bamboos
last album
with the
band.

FLIP-FLOPS:
No, were not even
talking about the
Brazilians take on
a glorified tsinelas.
What he rocked in
the 90s until his
comeback years
in the early 2000s
was an unidentified
pair of what looked
like a pair of Beach
Walks to complete
the breezy look.

PANTS: As the
singer upgraded
into being a mentor,
so did his trousers.
His tailored shirt
and jacket need a
better fitting pair of
pants, of course. As
for the washed out
jeans, well, theyre
back on trend, too.

SHIRTS AND
JACKET: Before
the glitz and
glamour as Coach
Bamboo of The
Voice, we identified
closely with
the T-shirt-wearing
rakista that was.
His suits might not
have survived all
the jumping and
kicking he used to
do in gigs anyway.
Now looking more
dapper in a tailored
jacket, we think
Camp Kawayan is
in good hands.

BOOTS: If youre
doing weekly duets
on ASAP with
Popstar Princess
Sarah Geronimo
you have to act and
look the part of an
equally talented
performer. And
sealing the look
with a pair of boots
(sans the
a la cowboy vibe)
has the makings of
a true rockstar.

2014 to present
Bamboo renews his
contract to serve as a
coach/judge for The
Voice Philippines second
seasonand seals his
status as one of the
countrys most easily
recognizable fashionistas.

2013 Bamboo hopped

on The Voice as a
coach slash judge.
He went on to mentor
youngins in The Voice
Kids in the year that
followed.

2012 Bamboo won

his first Awit Award:
Best Performance
by a Male Recording
Artist for the song
Questions. In the
same year he joined
ASAP on ABS-CBN
as a mainstay.

2011 News broke

via Twitter that
Bamboo the band
had disbanded.
Bamboo the man
confirmed this
days after the
rumor started
circulating. It was
imminent that he
was to pursue a
solo career. Not
incidentally, he
released his first
solo album.

at strangers. There is a lot to take in, but the

kendo is a sport that takes decades to fully
master. But in the meantime, Igarashi-sensei
reminded us about the club motto: Enjoy IGA
KEN! (Always smile!)
c a n i be a hero aka do we h a ve a
n a Ti o nal Team for T hi s?
Sort of. According to Kristopher Inting,
3rd-dan, IGA Ken delegation manager,
competitor in the Hong Kong Open, and
10th ASEAN Kendo Tournament, Currently,
there is no such thing as a national kendo
team, but we are still able to compete
internationally as there are tournaments that
allow clubs to represent their respective
countries. Suffice to say, Philippine kendo
is represented and we hope to be able to
finally formalize a federation sometime in

the future, It took Kristopher at least four

years to get his ranking (out of 8), though, so
might as well get started asap.
i s The of T - us ed s T aT emen T mas bagay
Tayo riTo kesa sa ba s k eT ba l l T rue?
Having created the sport, the Japanese are
obviously the champs at this and theyre
fellow Asians like us. Physical fitness is
required, but not brute forceproper form
and technique are more important. Also,
unlike many other martial arts, kendo does
not have weight or height categories in
competitionmeaning big, muscle-bound
jocks everywhere can actually get the
stereotypical beating from a shorter, wizened
Japanese man.
co sT: Around P2,600 for a shinaithe club
will lend you one at the beginning, but they
require your own within a month of training.
If you decide to continue long term, a proper
uniform from Japan is P6,000 to P7,000.
Armor is P30,000 minimumbut considering
it will take you more than a year to get there,
you are expected to save up for it. A bokuto
(the more familiarly shaped wooden sword)
is around P1,600 and is used by higher level
practitioners. Club fee is P1,500 to P2,000
monthly, depending on dojo location and
inclusive of lessons.
swa g f a c T or: Compared to MMA bros, you
look like a dignified warrior and the uniform
looks legit. Plus, constantly yelling things in
Japanese gives everything a certain mystique.

ARCHERY
T he exp erien c e: Upon entering
the air-conditioned Kodanda Archery
Range, we instantly liked the sport
because hindi ka papawisan. It took
just a few minutes of tutorial and
we were ready: stack the arrow on
the bows tiny ledge, clip its rear to
the bowstring (no need to hold it
medieval style and potentially shear
your fingers off like a noob), and
draw. A little crosshair helps you aim
while your pulling arm gets slightly
trembly. Release and physics rewards
you with a super satisfying thwack.
Were proud to say that FHM did not
accidentally shoot anyone in the head
with our first arrow. Our photographer
lined up alongside us, scored a better
shot, and we immediately lapsed into
a competitive ragethis sport is great
with friends in that way.
c a n i be a hero a k a d o w e h av e a
n a Tion a l T ea m f or T h i s ?
Yes, we do. In fact, Syd Fraginalour
coach for the daywon a Southeast
Asian games gold medal to match
his gilded bow that looked like an
ultimate weapon from Final Fantasy or
something. Recently, Luis Moreno, the
grandson of Kuya Germs, also scored
gold in the 2014 Youth Olympics.
c os T : P30,000-40,000 for the bow,
arrows, and other accessories. Steep
but assistant coach Lyn Alvarez
explains: Magagamit mo nang pangcompete yung bow na yun, maganda
na. Akala ng iba mahal ang archery,
pero one-time investment yanmatagal
ang buhay ng bow. Its also way more
accessible than things that go bang.
Mahirap ang lisensya ng baril so yung
iba nag-switch to archery kasi walang
lisensya, fun gamitin, and safe siya. Try
it out for P580 per person per hour!
Kodanda Archery Range is open from
Mondays to Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to
7:30 p.m. Makati (Cinema) Square
Upper Basement, Chino Roces Avenue,
Makati City.

HOCKEY

T h e e x perience: Sometimes you have to

run before you can walkbut we can barely
stand upright on skates, so we satisfied
ourselves with slapping a puck around on the
sidelines as the training pool of the Philippine
Hockey Federation went through their paces.
We first had to wait for the players to finish
putting on the layers of protective gear
needed. Hockey is a full-contact sport and if
you hate the idea of making laba a metric ton
of equipment after every game, this isnt the
sport for you. If youre a speed freak, though,
the most impressive thing about ice hockey is
the pace at which the game is played.
ca n i b e a hero aka do we h a ve a
n a Ti o n a l T eam for T his?
Yes. Francois Gautier, who plays in the
Manila Ice Hockey League and national team
competitor says: We recently formed the
Hockey Federation and its prime product
is the national team program. This year will
mark the first time that we will send a team
officially under the Philippine name...we do
fairly well in Asian competiton but at the
moment Id say Hong Kong and Taipei are
the teams to beat. Contact Carl Montano,
head coach for youth and development of
the Hockey Federation at 0917-8902591 for
more information.
co s T: Around P20,000 for a beginner set of
shin pads, pants, elbow pads, gloves, shoulder
pads, helmet with cage, skates, and stick.
Pro equipment costs more (P50,000 and up)
but you arent going to need it just yet. You
can rent gear for P400 at the rink, so theres
no need to worry about making that initial
investment and learning that you suck.
For formal lessons at the SM MOA rink,
contact 556-0470

FLOORBALL
T he exp erien c e: If youd rather
not freeze in the bowels of a
mall this summer, you can take
up floorball, which is basically
the on-foot version of hockey.
There is no contact, but the
pace and tricky stick moves
are all present. One interesting
quirk of the sport is substitution,
which involves swapping an
entire stack of six. No more
benchwarming!
can i be a hero aka do we have
a naTional Team for This?

Yes. In fact the team debuted

in Singapore last year. The
federation is assembling a team
for the floorball competition of
the SEA Gamesthe pool is
small, so no better chance to
join than now.
cos T : P1,000-P10,000 for a
stick. The International Floorball
Federation has supplied clubs
with a free stock of playing
equipment, though, so you
can simply borrow one as a
beginner.

DODGEBALL

T h e experience: We joined a bunch of players practicing for their

company league during the Philippine Dodgeball Association (PDBA)
training. Benedict Camara, PDBA head, briefed us on the simple
rules: 6-on-6. Catch a ball that hits you before it touches the ground.
The opposing striker who throws it goes out; a teammate can come
back in. One point whenever a team is wiped out. The dodgeball was
smaller and non-rubber unlike the big-ass balls in that Dodgeball
movie, which could actually leave you black and blue. We got to bean
people full force with a ball from close range, jump around to dodge
attacks, and experience the fun moment when theres only one
opponent left and everyone throws at him/her simultaneously.
c a n i be a hero aka d o we h a ve a na T i o na l Tea m for This ?
Sort of. The PDBA is recognized and gets funding from the World
Dodgeball Federation, but the player pool is often unavailable to
compete due to work commitments and suchmany of the best
players are also the players in the big company leagues such as the
MVP Olympics. We fare okay, but in true Philippine fashion, players
lack the desire to train and usually play on heart. [In Asia] the country
to beat is Singapore, says Camara.
is T he ofT -used sT a TemenT mas bagay Tayo riTo kesa sa
b a s k eT ball T rue?
Yes. Height or arm length doesnt matter. It is a persons overall
physical fitness that will give the player an advantageits like
boxingbut instead of two fists controlled by one brain, it is six
individuals moving as one to coordinate strikes and counter strikes
on an opposing team, Benedict says.

RC RACING
T he exp erien c e: We attended practice for the Philippine Nationals
and almost everything about full-size racing was present. The pit
area was full of tools, tinkering, the smell of fuel (the gnarly-sounding
nitromethane) and raspy idling of race exhausts. Its a bit disorienting
to steer an RC as it comes around head-on, and the small steering
inputs required meant we spent a lot of time smacking walls. But
who cares when you can jump your RC over 10 feet into the air (a
legit overtaking move by the way), botch the landing, cartwheel into
the barrier, and simply carry on. Kicking up dirt as you drift, giving
accidental love taps, throttle wide-open on the back straightits
basically everything you wish you could do with the family car.
c a n i be a hero a k a do w e ha ve a n a Tion a l T ea m f o r Th i s ?
Yes, the Radio Controllers and Modelers Association of the
Philippines (RCMP) is chaired by Congressman Jack Enrile, and
usually sends a contingent to the major Asian races. Winners of
Philippine Nationals can also represent the country in the World
Championships of the International Federation of Model Auto Racing
(IFMAR). Its also not a Manila-only thing, says Gareth Santayana,
part-owner of Action Hobbies, veteran racer of 23 years, and World
Championship competitor. People from Davao, Bacolod, Cebu
all come over to compete in the major races. Gareth adds that, We
are competitive, though countries with access to the latest parts have
an advantage. Thailand is very strong because they are considered
Asias racing hub. They have 10 RC-dedicated racetracks all over
Bangkokand they are supported by the government. We dont get
that here.

co s T: All you need are six dodgeballs that cost around P800 each.
A club will have 10-20 players so its very friendly on the pocket. The
cost for joining the PDBA Saturday training sessions? A cool P50.
sw a g facT or: Unless you have a real nice jersey, its safe to say that
dodgeball is not the swaggiest of sports. In fact, it looks like larong
batatamang bola!which is also part of its simple appeal.

About the most intimate things
youre allowed to learn about
former go-go dancer and present
pro model Ashley Vee is
Shes a fan of butt rubs, and butt
grabsthose things do it for me!
The sexiest piece of clothing
she owns is a nude seethrough underwear
She stands 52. Which, in her
own words, makes her: easier
to handle *wink*.
Teasing bits aside, the vaguely
Pinay and vaguely anywhere-butfrom-here beauty could easily be
an FHM fan favorite. Just because
of her gracious candor, wit, and,
well, lets not forget, because she
looks like this
Vee is an interesting last name. Where
are you from originally?
Thanks! Vee is actually short for my real
last name. Im originally from San Francisco,
California born and raisedbut Im also
Filipino-American.
And we hear youve been modeling for
close to ten years now, youre not new
to this at all...
Yes, Ive been modeling since I got out
of high school, and its been nothing but
amazing blessings so far! Lately, fashion
photo shoots are what I enjoy doing most
because the elegance is so much sexier to
me now. Although FHM Philippines is my first
international magazine feature. It has been
on my bucket list for the longest time, so Im
proud to have done it. Such a blessing!

86 FH M MAY 2015

Youre 52. Was your height ever an

issue?
Actually, sometimes I wish I were taller! Ha
ha! No one has actually tried discouraging
me from becoming a model because Im
52it just restrained me from doing work
that required a certain height that they were
looking for. I believe us shorter girls have way
more fun anyways. Ha ha!
How are petite girls more fun?
Were easier to handle (winks). And the best
things come in small packages!
Did you enjoy your visit to the
Philippines, by the way?
I love it here! They werent playing when
they said Its more fun in the Philippines! I
wouldnt mind moving out here: the weather,
food, beautiful places and the vibes are
amazing! Even after being here for a whole
month I never wanted to leave. I also got to
hang out with my family and enjoy a good
vacation. FHM was actually the only work I
did while I was here. Ive been working so
hard back home that I thought it was time for
some good R&R.
We might have seen photos of this
R&Rlike your bottom half sporting a
mermaid tail. Was that for work or just
for kicks?
What do you meanI was born a mermaid!
Ha ha! Kidding. The mermaid tail was all for
fun and fantasies!
Did it take a lot of hip action to wriggle
around in that tail?
Ha ha! A lot of hip and leg action. I must say
its a pretty good lower body workout.
But hip action should be easy on
account of you having done go-go
dancing. How tricky is that compared
with regular dancing?
Oh, I actually stopped go-go dancing for a
couple of years now! But its actually not that
trickyits all in the hips, the rhythm, and not
leaving the house without your boots with
the fur!

IVE BEEN TOLD

MOST GUYS ARE
INTIMIDATED BY ME.
I HONESTLY DONT
KNOW WHY, I AM THE
MOST DOWN-TOEARTH GAL ANYONE
WILL EVER KNOW!
How long did you do it before you
stopped?
Ive been dancing since I was 19. It actually
kick-started my modeling career because it
opened a lot of doors and big opportunities
to do bigger things. When I first started
go-go dancing it was something I just did for
funto get paid to dance at a club.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun.
It actually was a lot of funand a few years
after, I started traveling the world and did my
first live go-go performances in Australia. It
was awesome.
You seem like a really cool lady, but do
you think you intimidate a lot of guys?
Aw, thank you! Yes, Ive been told most guys
are intimidated by me. I honestly dont know
why. I am the most down-to-earth gal anyone
will ever know! I dont see why that would
intimidate any guy. Maybe its the resting
bitch face, ha ha! Other than that, I can be
one of the nicest gals youll ever meet.
Do you think being intimidating is a
compliment?
No, I dont. I certainly wouldnt want you guys
to be intimidated by me. I dont bite, I swear!
On the flipside: Have guys ever made
you feel intimidated?
None as far as I can remember. I just try to
find something I can relate to with them and
have a nice conversation and go from there.
And how are we to go from there?
Anyone who can genuinely make me laugh
has my heart all the way! After that I can feel
at home. And a guy who can cook me a bomb
meal or feed my stomach can easily make me
happy! I loooooove food! A perfect date would
be going on food adventures, ha ha!
Which part of womens bodies do
you think should get the most love,
intimately?
The booty. Those butt-rubs and butt grabs do
it for me! Seriously.
What do you think makes a gentleman
in the bedroom?
Easy, a gentleman is someone who takes
care of his lady first. FH M

Come in,

KAREN AMRY

hat do men really want

in a woman? Is it her
being independent and a
career go-getter? Or is it
her inevitable homemaking skills as a
woman? The list could just go on, and
the choices harder, as if we really have
the right to demand and choose. But
if were lucky to have the chance, then
why not have both?
Karen Amry here might just be
our lady of choice. A working woman,
who has her hands full as a model and
a registered nurse, but still remains
a homebody on her days off. I love
staying indoors with my familythats
how I have a good time, she says.
A career woman and a wife material
rolled into one? We like that. But
apart from being all that we wish she
could be, Karen here still has a set of
surprises should she decide to settle
down with a man: Aside from cooking
and watching television? Id like to
think I can bring most of the fun to the
bedroom. Im sexy and sultry. If youre
really lucky to fall under my type,
then youll know what I mean
Wed admittedly pick her type any
day; for now, we work on being her
man of choice

Its not obvious youre a rookie

in our pages.
I had things in my mind throughout
the shoot, and its too naughty to tell
what they are, ha ha! But I hope I
channeled my aggressive, experienced,
and driven side. What you see here
is not only my sexy side, but my
confident side too.
92 FH M MAY 2015

Confidentwe like that. Do you mind

guys who are confident in channeling
their other side, too?
I like confident guys, but I prefer the
silent type of confidence. I dont like
guys who are too loud and attentionseeking. They like being cocky and
macho to hide their insecurities by being
cocky and macho. And I expect a lot of
that this LaBoracay weekend! Ha ha!
What is it about a guy that could get
your attention then?
Subtlety and humor. Funny guys are
really charming. Having good looks
wont hurt either.
It was nice lounging with you at
home for this shoot. Are you really
a homebody?
Well, yeah. I love staying indoors with
my family to eat and watch movies. But
every now and then I still try to go out
with my friends for dinner and some
cocktails. Thats how I have a good time.
How are you like at home? Will we
really see you this made up, say, we
suddenly come for a surprise visit?
Ha ha! Not really. Im a laidback
person. Sometimes during my free
time I just stay in bed the whole day,
or youll catch me just reading books
or watching the television. And oh, I
cook, too!
The way to a mans heart is through
his stomach, as the old saying goes.
Whats your specialty dish that
guys crave?
Im pretty good with eggs I make a
mean omelette. Ha ha! Does that count?
People love my beef caldereta also.
A girl who can work around the
kitchenwe like that. Would you
consider yourself wife material?
Yes, because I love taking care of

facebook.com/FHM.ph

twitter.com/fhmphil

fhmphilofficial

my family. I think thats one good

qualification, right? Do boys like that?
Ha ha!
Do we hear wedding bells?
No, Im currently single. But I would
love to be with a family man. If he can
be that while being open-minded, driven,
and loving, then hed be perfect for me.
You just set our imaginations on fire.
Ha ha! Lets just put it this way: I love
it when a guy enjoys my sexiness.
When I know he wants me really bad,
I let him do whatever he wants with
me. And I would definitely give my
husband-to-be to be all access!
On a more serious note: Do you still
practice old-school ligawan where
you bring your suitor to meet
your parents?
Yes, and first-time introductions with
my dad usually dont go so well, ha
ha! He wont even speak to my suitors
when I attempt to introduce them. If
my suitor comes back to visit me again
at home, then it proves hes serious
about me.
Point taken. What else keeps you
busy now?
When I dont have modeling work,
you can see me at home or doing
cardio at the gym. I love working out.
Its important for me to stay fit. Im
also a registered nurse, by the way.
I practiced for two years. People get
surprised when they learn of it.
Any interesting hospital tales?
They say nurses usually go for hot
doctors, but I like being in control, so
my fantasies tend to be about naughty
patients! FH M

It was obviously meant to be

because youve made it this far! In
your opinion, how should people
treat the big decision nowadays?
All I can really say is that marriage
is a big deal. I think you shouldnt
marry just because your parents told
you so, or even because you have a
child together. I dont think those are
good reasons. I also believe that it
doesnt matter how long youve been
togetherI got married after being
with my hubby for two months! I say
that if you see yourself being with

that person for the rest of your life

no matter whatgo for it! Not just
through thick or thin but through
heaven and hell...and back to hell.
And back to heaven again, ha ha!
Malalaman mo rin sa sarili mo kung
sure ka eh. Kung may kaunting
doubt ka sa utak and puso mo, then I
dont think you should go through it.
And what is the benefit of being
married come bedtime?
I guess the best part about being
married, especially after a good
number of years, is that both of you
become very comfortable with each

other. Literal na wala nang hiya-hiya!

And I love that, ha ha! Its absolutely
different in bed when youre completely
comfortable with the person next to
you. So comfortable that you know
every inch of each others body; which
makes you both confident and less
intimidated. Mahihingi mo ang gusto
mo nang walang ilang, making things
hotter and even more satisfying. And
as a married woman, you need to come
up with different ways to satisfy your
partner in order for them to always
want more each time. How else do you
think Ive been keeping the same man
for seven years and counting? Ha ha!

My Mother is a Cebuana and my
father is American-Irish so Im a mix

Have you ever visited your fathers
homeland?
I was born there in Tennesse, but ever
since I could remember Ive been living
in Cebu. I grew up there.
Whats the best thing about growing
up in Cebu?
Definitely the beach, I could just go to
the beach anytime I wanted and that
was really nice. The best days of my life
so far have been on the beaches of Cebu.
Whats your favorite Cebuano food?
Lechon all the way!

When I was just 14 years old. Wow,
that was a long time ago. Ha ha! Im
20 now.
Did your family or friends have any
fears about you modeling?
Not really. Thankfully, they are very
supportive of my career.
Do you have plans to move out of Cebu?
Yes, Im actually leaving for the U.S.
this summer. Hopefully I find a job
there.
Were sure you will. Do you have
any cute Cebuana sisters you can
introduce to us?
I have four brothers; Im the only girl.

Ha ha! Im their princess.

Wow, so your brothers must be
protective of you. Do your brothers
give your suitors a hard time?
No, not really. Theyre really nice.
What about a protective boyfriend? Is
there one right now?
Yes. Hes from Negros Oriental but he
works in Cebu.
Sayang! So can we expect more
modeling from you? How about
visiting us here in Manila? Please
say yes

PRos:

typically have big arms and
strong hips.

KUYA

01

CAR WASH BOY

PRos:
Car washing, which requires
a lot of wiping, reaching, and
ducking, leads to strong arms
and legs and a stable back.

Recommended
woRkouts:

According to Coach Jay, any job

that requires reaching needs a
lot of shoulder stability work.

Towel stretch

cons:
The lower back and shoulders
tend to have a certain level of
wear and tear over time. The
legs, to a certain extent, are
also affected.

Dumbbell side laterals

1 Stand straight while holding
dumbbells on both sides.
2 Raise your upper arms until
your elbows are the same
height as your upper body.
3 Return to starting position.

1 Place a towel behind your

back, with one hand holding
from the top and the other
hand holding from the bottom.
2 Try to walk your fingers
together and also gently pull
from either direction, into the
most restricted motion.
3 Hold for 15 to 30 seconds,
and repeat three times.

Recommended
woRkouts:

Vertical and horizontal pull

exercises work best for jobs that
require force, reveals Coach Jay.

Pull-ups

1 Using a pronated grip with

hands slightly wider than
shoulder width, start in a
complete hanging position
under a fixed bar.
2 Drive your elbows out and
down to raise your body until
your chin is above a bar.
3 Use assistance if necessary.

One-arm standing
cable row

1 Use a narrow grip handle or a

close grip on a straight handle.
2 With feet shoulder-width
apart, knees slightly bent,
and abs tight, pull the weight
toward you until the handle
contacts your lower rib cage.
3 Extend the weight back
out until your arm is
completely extended.

Internal and external

rotation

1 Using a cable tower, stand

with your lifting arm closest to
the cable machine, with your
elbow flexed to 90 degrees.
2 Rotate your hand from
outwards to inwards, bringing
your hand towards your belly.
3 Switch positions so that your
lifting arm is farthest from the
cable machine.
4 Keep your elbow bent at 90
degrees and rotate your hand
outward from your abdomen.

www.fhm.com.ph

cons:
Because of all the meat and
carcasses they have to carry,
most butchers have shoulder
and lower back issues.
Accidental cuts and infections
are also a common occurrence.

Two-point dumbbell
row with fist

1 Stand holding a dumbbell in

your left hand, with your left
foot staggered slightly behind
the right.
2 Bench down into a good row
position and place your right
arm behind your back.
3 Row the dumbbell up and
rotate your shoulders as far
as possible.

building materials, pretty

Speaking of kuya

KUYA JL UPS
HIS SHOE
GAME ON THE
PAVEMENT

cons:
Since the job requires repetitive
hitting, heavy lifting, and climbing,
theyre vulnerable to lower back and
knee problems. And you obviously
cant discount the occupational
hazards (accidents and injuries).

Recommended
woRkouts:

Coach Jay recommends squats

and presses for those who would
like to venture into carpentry.

Pistol squat

1 Stand holding your arms

straight out in front of your
body at shoulder level, parallel
to the floor.
2 Raise your right leg off the floor,
and hold it there.
3 Push your hips back and lower
your body as far as you can.
4 Pause, and then push your body
back to the starting position.

Chest-supported
dumbbell rows

1 Grab a pair of dumbbells and

lay chest-down on a 45-degree
incline bench.
2 Let your arms hang straight
down, palms facing each other.
3 Row the dumbbells to the side
of your chest by bending your
elbows and squeezing your
shoulder blades.
4 Pause and lower the weights.

Goblet squats

1 Hold a dumbbell vertically next

to your chest, with both hands
cupping the dumbbell head.

KUYA

2 Brace your abs, and lower

your body as far as you can
by pushing your hips back and
bending your knees.
3 Pause, then push yourself back
to the starting position.

PRos:
Lifting while walking works a
persons arms, shoulders, and thighs.

04

WATER
DELIVERY
BOY

cons:
Shoulder and lower back problems,
not to mention hernia.

Recommended
woRkout:

Coach Jay points out that any

person who lifts heavy things for a
living should have a solid core and
a strong grip.

Farmers walk

1 Begin by standing between

any pair of heavy equipment
(dumbbells, kettlebells).
2 After gripping the handles, lift
them up by driving through
your heels, keeping your back
straight and your head up.

HOW I DID IT

E
ON

Heres a finance advocate who

wont ask you to buy his books

Back then, trading was really

a manual affair. You have
people shouting prices, so my job
was to stand in one corner and
basically wait for someone to tell
me what to do. So while I was
standing there, I sort of got the
hang of what was going on. I got
interested in the market, and then
every summer Id go back.
As an employee benefit back
then, I was allowed to set
up an account. I found out that
it was a faster way of making
money than putting money in
the bankthe money I invested
earned more than what my
savings up to that point had been
earning.
After college, I worked
for one of the Ortigases.
Basically, ako yung dakilang
alalay niya. I ended up working
for his stock brokerage, real
estate brokerage, insurance
brokerage, and in his bank as
well, and thats how I became
rounded in pretty much every
single legal form of investment
available.
Sometimes, you only begin
to respect other people when
you try to do what they do.
Prior to starting Pesos and Sense
on GMA News TV, I really thought
that being in front of a camera
was easyits not. Im used to
speaking in front of a crowd, but
its harder to speak in front of
a camera, where you cant see
118 FH M MAY 2015

The main thrust of why I

started Pesos and Sense
was objectivity. I think its hard
to be objective if youre taking
someones money. Normally,
when you have these shows,
you try not to really give outright
recommendations; you just try to
keep things generic. But if a bank
sponsors us, then a viewer asks
about the product of a competing
bank, how can we really be
objective there? If its sponsored, it
starts getting muddy.

Aral muna bago invest. Thats

the best thing Ive learned in my 25
years of practice, and it has also
become our motto in Pesos and
Sense, especially now that financial
instruments here in the Philippines
are getting more complex.

Filipinos have
this attitude
that they will
only invest once
theyre wealthy,
when it should be
the reverseif you
want to be wealthy,
you have to invest in
something.

A lot of people get turned

off by investing because
they feel like binebentahan
lang sila. Of course, if you talk
to someone who is being paid
to sell a product, objectivity is
always an issue. So, even if the
message is good, people begin to
tune out and they get the sense
that theyre not getting the whole
storythey get turned off, and
they end up missing out on a lot
of the benefits of investing.
People never really believe
that the fire is hot until they
get burned. When you tell
people to be cautious, especially
in the stock market, theyre not
going to listen to you. When they
facebook.com/FHM.ph

start losing money, thats when

they start to listen. Sadly, thats
one of the things people have to
go through. They have to learn
the hard way, especially when it
comes to investing.
By principle, I dont borrow
money. I might have gotten into
a few financial setbacks before
like credit card issues and even
market crashesbut I never got
into debt. Perhaps its okay to
borrow money for your business,
but on a personal level, its a big
no-no for me.
I really want to develop the
financial adviser profession
in the Philippines. Right now,
most of the financial advisers
here make more money by selling
a productthey are not really
getting paid on the advisory side.
Ideally, there should be a person
being paid to give advice so that
they can be objective, and you
can be confident with their advice
because they are not being paid
by another person to sell you
that product. There would be no
conflict of interest.

classic steakhouse favorites a nifty
twist. Not only are their beef cuts so
satisfyingly soft and juicy, the flavors
are further enhanced with sidings
and flavors you never thought would
complement the main dishes so well.

At the center of Yakumi

is an open kitchen
where the crew,
headed by decorated
Chef Norimasa Kosaka,
concoct mouthwatering
creations right before
your eyes. Its like
performance art how
they turn freshly
sourced produce
into something thats
pleasing not only to the
taste buds but also to
the eyes. (You can even
have them grind fresh
Wasabi for you.) Their

You might have

doubts about the
Tata Manza Aura
at first glance. But
while the Indian-manufactured
sedan boasts the look of its
Japanese counterparts, it is
packed with features that can
outperform the rest. With its
heavy-duty eco-diesel engine,
it promises true fuel efficiency.
How true, you ask? Were
talking up to 29km/L efficiency
here, Metro Manila traffic
notwithstanding.
While it wins in the budget
department, it doesnt slouch in
the ride experience either, with
its adjustable lumbar support
seats, steering wheel mounted

With a whole host of features,
we say its the

3D PRINTING

Why import from China or order from

Amazon when you can build anything on
your desktop with a 3D printer? Yeah,
you got that right. With a 3D Printer
from the likes of MakerBot, Printrbot,
or FlashForge, real-life 3D objects can
appear like magic from a 3D drawing on
your computer. You name it, you can build
it, and theres more stuff to build every
day. You can 3D print toys, prosthetic
hands, iPhone cases, lamps, kitchen
utensils, a bust of yourself, Legos, and
more. And yes, you can even print guns.
Make no mistake about it, 3D Printing is
the future.

Lets face it, the smart devices we are so

addicted to cant get much smarter. Sure,
they can get faster, the screens can get a little
better, and more apps can do more things, but
its all diminishing returns from there, baby. But
there is one area where tech advances can
still make a big difference to your smartphone
experience, and thats the regularly overheating,
underpowered thing
stuck in the back
of your mobile: the
battery. If theres
one spec you need
to pay attention to
nowadays, its
not processor
speed or how
many cores
your phone
has, its
battery life.

VIRTUAl REAlITY

Whats this doing on the list, you ask?

Hasnt virtual reality been hyped like
crazy? Well, yes and no. VR headsets like
Facebooks Oculus Rift, HTCs Vive, and
Microsofts HoloLens promise a vibrant
future in gaming, but theyve all been
conservative when it comes to how these
devices will change your life outside of
gaming. Facebook has hinted of a future
where VR plays a role in social media,
and Microsoft has showed us some
possible applications for augmented
reality, but its anyones guess where this
is all going. Well go out on a limb and
say that VR is going to go very, very far.
This is one tech to keep an eye on.

1 The Internet
of Things
A world of things
connected to the Internet
turned out to be hard
to explain and harder to
sell. Never mind that tech
watchers unanimously
said the Internet of
Things would be the next
big thing. The movement
is still having a hard time
getting beyond Internetconnected appliances.
Besides, yaya can do all
of those things anyway.
2 Smart Watches
Whats the Apple Watch
for? No one knows.
Heres an idea: We
should be thanking
Apple for launching the
$10,000 Apple Watch
as the new gold standard
in douchebag detection,
Anna Kendrick said on
Twitter. So true, ate.
3 Wearable Tech
Ditto goes for wearable
tech in general. Aside
from fitness bands like
the Fitbit, theres no killer
app for wearable tech,
and no reason you have
to have it. Move along,
people, move along.

NEAR FIElD
COMMUNICATIONS
NFC lets you do stuff
just by waving your
phone in the air: like
wirelessly transferring
photos and contacts,
and paying for things
without cash. You can
open doors without
using keys. NFC
has the potential to
usher in the age of
the digital wallet,
a future where
we wont need
cash anymore, just
phones. Lets not
kid ourselvesits
all about the digital
wallet.

THE MOST
OVERRATED THINGS
IN TECH ARE

INTERNET

With the countrys Internet speeds being

among the slowest in our region, it
would seem the Internet itself is an
underratedand neglectedtech
in the Philippines. According
to a report by research group
Akama, the Philippines has an
average speed of 2.5Mbps,
which places us in the 103rd
spot in the world, below
practically everyone in our
region and just above India.
Compare that to No. 1 South
Koreas blazing 24.6Mbps
average speed. Weve got a
long way to go, Pilipinas.

THE CHALLENgE
In making a local app, theres a lot of cultural
references. So a Pinoy app may go viral locally
but it doesnt necessarily mean papatok din siya
internationally. Thats the biggest challenge for
me, for Pinoy apps to appeal locally, but also to
appeal to international audiences.
THE DREAM
For Pinoy apps in general, the biggest hope
is for it to still be relevant in a sea of all these
other apps: Is your game good enough na
lalaruin siya ng users past 10 times? Will they
still be playing it after a week?

APP iNSPiRATiON
Other countries currently

the Philippines didn't. We came up with this
app to fix that.
THE CHALLENgE
I partnered with University of the Philippines

platforms. The train of thought
for coding and development
is different for Android, iba
rin for iOS. There are a lot of
considerations to think about when
developing an app, but this is what
people dont talk about.
THE DREAM
Vidar: The good news is, its
easier to be a developer today
than back when I started.
Everything is online. But the
downside with too much digital
spoon-feeding is, when aspiring
developers are faced with a
problem that they cant solve by
Googling, they think theres no
