Problem Solving Project

The document discusses problem solving skills for 2nd grade students according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. It outlines that students should apply mathematics to real world problems, use a problem solving model of analyzing information, developing a plan, finding a solution, justifying their answer and evaluating the process. The document also includes an example problem of a rubber ball dropped from a roof and calculating the total distance it travels after bouncing three times. It shows the step-by-step work and determines the answer is 45 meters.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills

2nd Grade
1) Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and
demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:
(A) apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace;
(B) use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a
plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving
process and the reasonableness of the solution;
D) communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple
representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate;

"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is dropped from a rooftop 18 m above the
ground, what is the total distance traveled by the time it hits the ground the third time?

a. 31.5 m
b. 40.5 m
c. 45 m
d. 63 m

Problem Solving

The ball is dropped from the roof to the ground.

The ball falls and bounces 18 meters to the ground.

The ball goes up 9 meters up and 9 meters down on the second

bounce.

The ball goes up 4.5 meters and goes down 4.5 meters.

You can now add up all the numbers:

18+9+9+4.5+4.5= 45 meters

Answer

Total distance the rubber ball traveled was 45 meters.
