This document summarizes the different types of logical channels in a GSM network. It describes traffic channels that carry speech or data, control channels like BCCH for broadcast information and CCCH for common control, and dedicated channels like DCCH for dedicated control. Specific control channels are discussed like RACH for random access, PCH for paging, SCH for synchronization, and SACCH/FACCH for measurement and handover messages. The combinations of these channels and their associated timeslots are also outlined.

Physical Channel
This is the medium over which the
information is carried.

Logical Channels
The logical channels consist of the
information carried over the physical
channel.

Types of Logical Channels

Traffic Channels
Control Channels

Traffic Channel
These Channels carries speech or
data information.
Full Rate Channel
Speech ( 13 Kbps net , 22.8Kbps
gross)
. Half Rate Channel
Speech ( 12.2 Kbps/net , 22.8Kbps
gross)

Control Channel Groups

BCCH Group
CCCH Group
DCCH Group

BCCH Group
All BCCH Channels are in downlink
only
SCH carries information for frame
synchronization
FCCH provides information for carrier
synchronization.

BCCH
This channel carries the following
information:
Location area identity
Cell identity
DTX permitted
List of frequencies used in Cell etc.

FCCH
Frequency correction channel
This allows the mobile to synchronize
its own frequency to that of
transmitting BTS

SCH
SCH Carries the following info.
Frame Number
Base station identity code (BSIC)
This allows the MS to synchronize to
the TDMA frame

CCCH
The Common Control Channel Group
works in U/L & D/L
RACH (Random Access Channel)
PCH (Paging Channel)
CBCH ( Cell Broadcast Channel)

RACH
RACH is used by MSs to gain access
to the System

PCH
PCH is used by the System to call MS

CBCH
CBCH is used to transmit messages
to be broadcasted to all MSs within
Cell. For example., road traffic
information , sporting results.

AGCH
Access Grant Channel
This is used in Downlink
This is used to assign resources to
the MS., such as SDCCH

DCCH
Dedicated Control Channels.
This Group consists of SDCCH , ACCH
( SACCH and FACCH)

SDCCH
This supports the transfer of data to
and from MS during call set up and
validation.

SACCH
Slow associated control channel
This is used for radio link
measurement and power control
messages.

FACCH
FACCH is used to pass event type
messages for example Handover
Messages

FACCH & SACCH

Both channels are operated in U/L &
D/L
