80 Diffuser Performance - Bernoulli Eq. vs. Compressibility Analysis

The document asks the student to consider an ideal jet diffuser with an inlet velocity of 300 m/s and inlet pressure and temperature of 50 kPa and 5oC. The student is to find the maximum pressure in the diffuser using the Bernoulli equation and isentropic compressibility analysis, and plot the predicted pressure difference in the diffuser for Mach numbers from 0 to 1.5, showing that the two analyses are nearly equal for Mach numbers less than 0.3. The plot is due on June 22, 2015.

Consider an ideal diffuser for a jet with a velocity of 300 m/s.

Find the maximum pressure that

can be obtained in the diffuser if the inlet pressure and temperature are 50 kPa and 5oC . Plot the
predicted maximum pressure using both the Bernoulli Eq. and a cold-air-standard isentropic
analysis that includes compressibility. (See Example 9-9).
Plot the predicted pressure difference in the diffuser for Mach numbers, 0 < Ma < 1.5. The plot
should be professional in appearance to earn full credit. Below is a plot up to Ma = 1.2.
Notice that the two analyses are nearly equal for Ma < 0.3 (or so).
Due: June 22, 2015.
