Future Forms - English

There are four main ways to talk about the future in English: the present simple, present continuous, be going to, and will. The present simple is used for scheduled events. The present continuous is used for definite plans or arrangements. Be going to is used for predictions based on evidence or existing intentions/plans. Will is used for general predictions or spontaneous decisions.

Future Forms

Present Simple
1. In sentences that concern events that are on a
definite schedule or timetable. These sentences
usually contain future words. Only a few verbs are
used in this way, eg: to be, open, close, begin, start,
end, finish, arrive, come, leave, return.
The train LEAVES Gorzw at 9pm tonight.
Joanna STARTS work next week.

Present Continuous
1. In sentences that concern a definite
plan or arrangement. These sentences
usually contain future words, or the
future is understood from the context.
Mietek IS TAKING his CAE exam next
year.
They cant play tennis with you tomorrow.
TheyRE WORKING.

Tomorrow IS Thursday.
WeRE GOING to the cinema on Friday.

Be Going To

Will

1. When the speaker is making a prediction based


on evidence.
