Non Routine Problem

The document contains 3 word problems with solutions using Polya's problem solving steps. The first problem involves calculating the final distance traveled by a distribution team that travels to 10 departments located at increasing distances from headquarters. Using an arithmetic progression formula, the final distance is calculated to be 290 km. The second problem involves calculating the circumference of a semi-circle with a radius of 7 meters. Using the formula for circumference of a circle, the answer is calculated to be 22 cm. The third problem involves calculating the number of Indian students in a class of 49 students, where Chinese students outnumber Indians 3 to 1 and there are 17 Malay students; the number of Indian students is calculated to be 12.

Use formula
Non routine problem 1:
Each day they distribute people needs around ten departments stores in
peninsular Malaysia. The first store is near by to the head quarters which is 20 km,
as follow 50km, 80km, 110 km.n. They usually move to all of the places. Calculate
the final distance before they back to head quarters in km.
Polyas steps:
Step 1:

Understanding the problem.

Calculating the final distance.

Step 2:

devising a plan

Use a formula
Arithmetic progression.

Tn=a +(n-1)d
Step 3: carry out the plan.

n=10, a=20, d=(50-20,80-50,110-80)

=30
By using the formula,

T10 =20 +(10-1)30

=20+ (9)30
=20+270
= 290 unit
:- 290km
Step 4: look back
R5=110+30
R6=140+30
R7=170+30
R8=200+30
R9=230+30
R10=260+30
R10=260+30

=290

Non routine problem 2:

Groups of physical education students are given a work at field. The worksheet indicates that
they have to draw a semi-d at centre of the field. The radius is 7 metres. Calculate the
circumference of the semi circle.
Polyas steps:
Step 1:

Understanding the problem.

Calculating the cicumference of semi circle.

Step 2:

devising a plan

Use a formula
2r

Step 3: carry out the plan.

x 2r
= x

= x 27
= X 43.98
=21.99 = 22 CM
Step 4: look back

Non problem3

There are 49 students in a classroom. They are from three major races. The Chinese are 3
times more than the Indian students whereby the numbers of Malay students are 17. Now,
Calculate the amount of Indian students in the class.
Polyas steps:
Step 1:

Understanding the problem.

Calculating the amount of Indian students.

Step 2:

devising a plan

Use a formula
equation
lets, Indian students are known as X and Chinese are Y.
Step 3: carry out the plan.

X + Y + 17 = 49
X + Y = 49 13
X + Y = 36
3Y = 36
Y=36/3
Y = 12
Step 4: look back
