The Texas Accent lesson Plan
Learning Objective: Students will be able to differentiate a Texas accent from a
Midwestern American accent. They will be able to do so by listening for key vocabulary
words and by a distinct grammar pattern.
Materials for 36: Power point, Computer, Projector, 40 worksheets, writing utensils
Form (Grammatical things)

-To sound more native (in Texas)
-To better comprehend Texas accent

New Vocabulary: Howdy, Dont be a stranger, yall, Ill tell you what
New Phonology: -in, -uh, aCross Cultural Considerations: Assuming there is arent any students who have been to
America, it should be assumed that no one knows anything about Texas. So while
introducing the lesson, make sure introduce images of Texas and operate as if theyve never
experienced any of the culture before. Try to connect it to their home culture in some ways.
Try to establish a need to want to study the language.
Assessment: The assessment stage will be at the very end. While the students are
introducing themselves again to each other, walk around and hear what they are saying.
This will show that they have acquired the proper knowledge to understand the Texas
Accent.

1. Pull up a map of the 5 major US regions
a. Explain how each one has a slightly different accent

2. Ask where Greg is from? Ask where Texas is?


3. Talk about how big Texas is
a. Talk about famous people in Texas
4. Show a map where Texas is
a. This is where I come from, and today we will be talking about the Texas
accent
The Texas Accent (15 minutes)
1. The Texas accent is one of the most famous accents across the country. It is
often the standard Cowboy accent
2. Here is an example of what a Texas accent sounds like to the rest of the US
population
a. Play a clip of Boomhauer talking (From the show King of the Hill)
b. Ask if the students can understand what hes talking about
3. The actual accent isnt as strong as that, for the most part. When written
down, the Texas accent looks exactly like the rest of English. It only sounds
different when spoken.
4. The accent of someone from Texas is characterized by its sing-songy, up and
down nature.
5. Talk about why the Accent is important
6. People in Texas like to change the suffixes of words. Here are two of the
biggest examples.
a. The suffix ing becomes in
b. The suffix r becomes uh
i. Maybe Texans and Koreans are related
c. Ask the class to work on some of the examples on their worksheets for
a couple of minutes. (2 minutes)
7. People in Texas also like to change to put the word a in front of verbs that
end with in (-ing)
a. I was a walkin down the street
b. I was a swimmin in the pool.
c. As I was a sayin, people from Texas talk a little funny.
d. Ask for them to do the worksheet questions (2 minutes)
Texas Vocabulary (10 minutes)
1. The Texas accent also uses a lot of different vocabulary words than in the rest
of the state. Today I will teach you 4 of them.
a. Yall
b. Howdy
c. Dont be a stranger
d. Ill tell you what
2. Yall
a. This is a contraction. It means You all. It is a plural form of the word
you
3. Howdy!
a. It is a short word meaning How do you do? However in Texas, it
simply is just a greeting. We use it instead of Hello or Hi

4. Dont be a stranger!
a. Do yall know what a stranger is?
b. This is how we say good bye in Texas. If you come to visit me you
cannot be a stranger. So the idea is to tell the person to come visit you
often.
5. Ill tell you what
a. Used to provide emphasis on certain phrases
b. Ask if they know what emphasis is
The Culmination (5 minutes)
1. Now I want you to turn to your neighbor and practice coming up with some of
your own Texas sentences! Introduce yourself to your neighbor. Ill introduce
myself first.
a. Have them repeat after me for an example
b. Give them 5 minutes
Dont be a stranger (About 5 minutes left)
1. Since this will be our last class together, I just wanted to say goodbye. You all
have been wonderful. You are the first group of students Ive ever had the
pleasure to work with, and it brings a tear to my eye that our time was so
short.
