ABSTRACT
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Switched Reluctance Motor are special machines that
are used in various fields of industrial and military applications particularly in aerospace domain. Their
working is studied and the mechanical properties of the machines are investigated to check which of
their characteristics enable them to be used in a wide range of operating conditions. The construction
and the design is to be studied and working principle is ascertained to get an in depth understanding to
do analysis of their viability in various fields.
The ANSYS Maxwell software is used as the tool for this purpose. It involves the construction of
the machines and the analysis of the behavior of flux lines in the machine and to get to know the flux
behavior in air gap. By using the flux characteristics, the parameters like torque, speed, output power are
calculated. These characteristic graphs helps us to understand the inherent nature of the machine and
their adaptability for various applications.
In case of aerospace applications, constraints like weight of the machine and the operating
temperature come into picture. The possibility of changing the core material with same magnetic
properties as of a normal machine with lesser weight can be a solution, such investigations can be done
by using ANSYS Maxwell. The optimum solutions can be obtained by simulation and the existing
applications can be studied for a better understanding.
