Sequence

The document contains a series of math problems involving sequences. It begins with a series of fill-in-the-blank questions involving patterns of numbers, letters, days, and colors. It then provides definitions and examples of finite and infinite sequences. It explains that a sequence is a set of numbers in a definite order according to a rule. The document distinguishes between finite sequences, which have a definite number of terms, and infinite sequences, which have an endless number of terms. It provides examples of each type of sequence. It concludes with an activity section posing additional sequence problems.

SEQUENCE
set of numbers written in a special order

by the application of a definite rule.

function whose domain is the finite set
{1, 2, 3, , n} or the infinite set {1, 2,
3,}
Each number of the sequence is called a TERM

KINDS OF SEQUENCE
1. FINITE SEQUENCE {1, 2, 3, , n}
a sequence with definite number of
terms.
2. INFINITE SEQUENCE {1, 2, 3,}

a sequence having endless number

of terms.

KINDS OF SEQUENCE

1.
FINITE SEQUENCE
a sequence with definite number of terms.

has its first term and the last term.

Example:
a. 2, 4, 6 , 8
b. , , ,

FINITE SEQUENCE
Example:
n
1

a(n)

-1

10

We may use the notation a1, a2, a3,, an to

denote a(1), a(2), a(3),,a(n), respectively.

KINDS OF SEQUENCE
2. INFINITE SEQUENCE {1, 2, 3,}

a sequence having endless number of

terms.

Has its first term but no last term, hence, it

is endless.
Example:
a. 1, 2, 3, 4,
b. 3, 7, 13, 21,

INFINITE SEQUENCE
Example:

Activity 1: Term after Term

Find the first terms of the sequence given the nth term.

1. an = n + 4
2. an = 2n 1
3. an = 12 3n
4. an = 3n
5. an = ( 2)n

Activity 2: Getting to know you

What
is the nth term for each sequence below?
