Contract OF Affreightment: BY Capt. K. Kumar

A contract of affreightment (COA) is an agreement between a charterer and ship owner or disponent owner to transport a stated quantity of named goods between specified places over a specified period of time using vessels of a certain type and size. The COA clearly defines the goods to be carried and total period, as well as a stated minimum or maximum quantity to be loaded each voyage, with a more or less option. The COA is based on a standard charter party with additional rider clauses and may be supplemented by separate voyage charter parties for each voyage. COAs are used by operators who charter ships on each voyage as they do not have their own fleet.
