Certaindiagnosticcodesand/oreventcodesmaypreventtheenginefromstarting.Connectthe
CaterpillarElectronicTechnician(ET)andcheckforactivecodesand/orloggedcodes.Troubleshootany
codesthatarepresentbeforecontinuingwiththisprocedure.

FuelLevel
Visuallycheckthefuellevel.Donotrelyonthefuelgaugeonly.Ifnecessary,addfuel.

OilLevel
Checktheengineoillevel.Ifnecessary,addoil.
Note:Engineoilsuppliestheinjectionactuationpressurecircuit.Properengineoillevelisnecessaryfor
fuelinjection.

RemoteShutdownSwitch
Makesurethattheremoteshutdownswitchisrunposition.UseCatETtoverifythestatusofthe
shutdownswitch.Ifaproblemwiththeremoteshutdownswitchissuspected,checktheelectricalcircuit
fortheswitch.

ElectricalConnectors
Checkforcorrectinstallationofthefollowingconnectors:
J1/P1ECMconnector
J2/P2ECMconnector
J20/P20Enginespeed/timingsensorconnector
J44/P44Enginespeed/timingsensorconnector
Unitinjectorconnectors
RefertoTroubleshooting,"ElectricalConnectorsInspect".

CircuitBreakers
Checkthecircuitbreakers.ifacircuitbreakeristripped,resetthecircuitbreaker.

FlashFile
VerifythatthecorrectflashfileisinstalledintheECM.

Note:IfanewECMhasbeeninstalled,theECMwillneedtobeprogrammedbeforetheenginewillrun.
Also,theECMwillnotcommunicatewithCatETiftheECMhasnotbeenprogrammed.

EngineSpeed/Timing
1. CranktheengineandobservetheenginespeedonthestatusscreeninCatET.IfCatETindicates
0rpm,troubleshootthecircuitfortheenginespeed/timingsensor.
2. Ensurethatthetimingreferencegearisinstalledcorrectly.Theenginewillnotstartifthegearwas
installedbackward.Checkforproperorientationbetweenthecrankshaftandcamshaftdrivegears.
Correcttheorientationand/orreplacethedrivegear,ifnecessary.Refertotheengine's
DisassemblyandAssemblymanual.

InjectionActuationPressure
1. Checktheengineoillevel.ifnecessary,addoil.Verifythatthepressureforthelubeoilsystemis
accurate.
Note:Engineoilsuppliestheinjectionactuationpressurecircuit.properengineoillevelis
necessaryforfuelinjection.
2. CranktheenginewhileyouobservetheinjectionactuationpressureontheCatETstatusscreen.if
theinjectionactuationpressureisatleast5000200kPa(72529psi),theproblemisnotinthe
injectionactuationpressurecontrolsystem.
3. Checkthesealsontheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalve.ifthesealsarefaulty,replacethe
sealsandrepeatStep1.
4. Checkthewiringharnesstotheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalveforopensand/orshorts.
5. Measurethecoilresistanceontheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalve.Ifthecoilresistance
isnotbetween5.0Ohmsand15.0Ohms,replacetheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalve.
6. Iftheinjectionactuationpressureduringcrankingislessthan5000200kPa(72529psi),the
highpressureoilsupplycircuitmayhavealeak.
a. Unplugtheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalveandtheunitinjectorconnectors.

Thisengineuseshighvoltagetocontrolthefuelinjectors.
Disconnectelectronicfuelinjectorenablecircuitconnectortoprevent
personalinjury.
Donotcomeincontactwiththefuelinjectorterminalswhiletheengine
isrunning.
b. DisabletheunitinjectorswithCatETand/ortheengineshutdownswitch.

c. Removethevalvemechanismcover.
d. Cranktheenginewhilecheckingthedrainholesintheunitinjectoradapterandthejumper
blocksealsforleaks.
e. Excessiveleakagewillresultinalargestreamofoilflowfromthedrainholeoftheaffected
unitinjector'sadapter.Thesplashingofengineoilwillbevisibleatthebottomoftheoil
shieldforthejumperblock'sadapter.IFanexcessivelyleakingunitinjectorisdiagnosed,
replaceonlytheexcessivelyleakingunitinjector.Leakingjumperblocksealscanalsocreate
thisproblem.Thiscanbediagnosedwiththetechniquethatisdescribedabove.Replace
leakingseals.
f. Iftheproblempersists,theremaybeaproblemwiththepumpcompensatordisplacement
control.Correctthisproblemwiththecompensator'skit.Adjusttheloadforthespoolspring
byturningtheretainingscrew.Unplugtheinjectionactuationpressurecontrolvalveand
adjustthescrewinordertoobtainapressureof5000200kPa(72529psi)duringengine
cranking.
g. Iftheinjectionactuationpressureremainslowafterinstallinganewkitforthecompensator,
installalongerplugforthecompensator.Thelongercompensatorplugthatismarkedwitha
"D"ispartoftheplugkit.Iftheinjectionactuationpressureisabovethespecifiedrange,
selecttheshortercompensatorplugfromtheplugkitthatismarkedwitha"B".
h. Ifthepressurecannotbeobtained,replacethepumporrebuildthepump.

UnitInjectors
PerformtheInjectorSolenoidTestwithCatETinordertodetermineifalloftheinjectorsolenoidsare
beingenergizedbytheECM.Troubleshoottheelectricalcircuitfortheinjectors.

FuelSupply
1. Checkthefuellinesforthefollowingproblems:restrictions,collapsedlinesandpinchedlines.If
problemsarefoundwiththefuellines,repairthelinesand/orreplacethelines.
2. Checkthefueltankforforeignobjectswhichmayblockthefuelsupply.
3. Checkforairinthelowpressurefuelsupplysystemifanyofthefollowingprocedureshavebeen
performed:
Replacementofthefuelfilters
Serviceonthelowpressurefuelsupplycircuit
Replacementofunitinjectors
Note:Asightglassinthelowpressuresupplylineishelpfulindiagnosingairinthefuel.Referto
TestingandAdjustingformoreinformation.

Donotcranktheenginecontinuouslyformorethan30seconds.Allow
thestartingmotortocoolfortwominutesbeforecrankingtheengine
again.

4. Purgeairfromthelowpressurefuelsupplycircuit.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,
"FuelSystemPrime"forthecorrectprocedure.
5. Checkfuelquality.Intemperaturesbelow0C(32F),checkforsolidifiedfuel(wax).Referto
SpecialInstruction,SEBD0717,"DieselFuelsAndYourEngine".
6. Checkthefuelpressureafterthefuelfilterwhiletheengineisbeingcranked.RefertoTestingand
Adjustingforthecorrectpressurevalues.Ifthefuelpressureislow,replacethefuelfilters.Ifthe
fuelpressureisstilllow,checkthefollowingitems:fueltransferpump,fueltransferpump
couplingandfuelpressureregulatingvalve.RefertoTestingandAdjustingformoreinformation.

Checkforcombustionproblems.
