Time Using: For & Since

For is used to indicate duration and can be used with all tenses. It refers to a period of time from a starting point to an end point. Since refers to a precise moment in time and is used to indicate a period of time from that moment until now. It is normally used with perfect tenses and can also be used in structures like "It is [period of time] since..." Both terms are used with time expressions like hours, days, months, years, etc. to specify a duration or point in time.

FOR
 DURATION OF TIME

• From the start of the period until
the end of the period

FOR can be used with all tenses

• They study for 2 hours every day.


• I will love you for ever.
• I have been living in Mexico for 3
months.
• They have been married for a long
time.
• The library has been there for 2
centuries.
FOR is NOT used with :

• all day (for all day)


• all the time (for all the time)

• For 20 minutes
• For three days
• For 6 months
• For 4 years
• For 1 centuries
• For a long time
• For ever


SINCE
 A PRECISE MOMENT IN TIME

• From a point in the past until
now

 up -------------->| now

Since is normally used with
perfect tenses

• He has been here since 9 am.


• I started school since Monday.
• We have known each other since my
childhood.
• Led Zeppelin has been around since
the 1960’s.
Since can also be used in the
structure:
 It is [period of time] since…

• It has been 3 years since I’ve been to
Chicago.
• How long has it been since you got
married?
SINCE
• Since 9 am
• Since Monday
• Since January
• Since 1997
• Since the 80’s
• Since I left school
• Since the beginning of
school
