Undefined Objects

This document introduces key geometric concepts and terms including points, lines, planes, line segments, and rays. It explains that clear definitions are needed to discuss geometry precisely. Points, lines, and planes are identified as indefinable basic objects used to define other geometric objects like line segments and rays. The document provides definitions for these terms and notes that line segments are the only object that can be measured in geometry.

NEED FOR DEFINITIONS

What are we talking
about?
We need to be clear
that we are talking
about the same
things.
What would happen if
mathematicians
wanted to study a
widget?

PROBLEM WITH DEFINITIONS

WHERE DO WE START?

Define a point

What are the problems with those definitions?

We need to start with something indefinable

The indefinable objects in geometry are points,
lines, and planes.

POINT
The basic unit of
geometry
No size
Infinitely small
Simply a location
(location where?)
Small dot models a
point

LINE
Straight arrangement
of points (straight)
Infinitely many points
on a line
Has length but no
thickness
Extends forever in two
directions
Taut string models a
line

PLANE
Has length and width
but no thickness
Flat surface that
extends forever (flat?
surface?)
A slice of cheese
models a plane

PRACTICE

SPACE AND LINE SEGMENTS

Space is the set of all
points.
A line segment
consists of two points
and all the points
between them that lie
on the line containing
the two points.
The two points of a
line segment are call
the endpoints.

PRACTICE

MEASURING LINE SEGMENTS

We us a ruler to measure and draw (not
construct!) lines.
Length is the distance between its endpoints.
Can be written two ways
MN = 2

= 4.5 cm

PRACTICE

RAYS
Ray AB is the part of
line AB that contains
point A and the points
on AB that are on the
same side of A as B.
Point A is the
endpoint of ray AB.

PRACTICE

CONCLUSION
We need clear definitions
Definitions are circular without indefinable
terms.
Points, lines, and planes are indefinable objects.
We now can define other basic geometric objects.
We measured line segments (all other objects are
not measurable).

I can label and measure undefined objects to define

space, line segment, endpoint, and ray.
