EEM 613 Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry Home Assignment 4 Year: 2012-13

This document contains three questions related to atmospheric physics and chemistry for a home assignment. Question 1 asks the student to write mass balance equations for water in different size bins as ice or liquid in the atmosphere, as well as the total water content balance. Question 2 provides boundary conditions for potential virtual temperature, pressure, and scalar velocity across a grid cell and asks the student to calculate virtual temperature, air density, energy density at the boundaries, and the potential virtual temperature at the grid cell center after 10 seconds. Question 3 gives scalar velocity boundary conditions across a grid cell and asks the student to calculate the scalar velocity at the top of the cell if the atmosphere is incompressible.

Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry

Home Assignment 4
Year: 2012-13

Question 1
Water in the atmosphere exists as a gas, liquid or solid. Particle size categories (bins) have
been formed to estimate the total water content in a given model. Following size bins are
assumed:
0.1 unit, 10 units, 100 units;
in which water exists as ice up to bin 2, and as liquid up to bin 3.
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.

Write the mass balance for qL,i and qI,i for each size bin neglecting and external source
or sink term.
Write the mass balance for total water content.
Assuming that water vapour deposits as ice, rewrite the mass balance equations.
Assuming that water vapour condenses as liquid droplet, rewrite the mass balance
equations.

Question 2
A grid has dimensions x = 4 km, y = 3 km and z = 0.1 km. Assume that the potential virtual
temperature, pressure and scalar velocity at the west boundary v,1 = 302 K, pa,1 = 1000 mb and u1 =
+7 m s-1 respectively, and those at the east boundary of the grid cell are v,2 = 298 K, pa,1 = 1006 mb
and u1 = +8 m s-1 respectively.
i.
ii.
iii.

Calculate the virtual temperature and air density at the west and east boundaries of the grid
cell.
Calculate the energy density at each boundary.
Assuming diabatic energy sources and sinks and eddy diffusion are absent; calculate the
potential virtual temperature at the centre of grid cell after 10 s.

Question 3
Assume that a grid cell has dimension x = 5 km , y = 4 km z = 0.1 km and that the west , east
,south, north, and lower scalar velocities are u1 = +3, u2 = + 4,v3 = -3 , v4 = +2 and 5 = +0.2 m s-1 .
if the atmosphere is incompressible , what is at the top of the cell ?
