KTR Couplings for

KTR A competent partner!

For advanced
drive
technology

KTR is a worldwide market leader in the range of flexible couplings. With experiences of more than 45 years in
power transmission we place trends in the development of coupling technology. In the meantime many of our
products have become an industrial standard and our engineers continuously work on new solutions we are
looking forward to working on your application! Every day more than 800 shipments leave our new modern
logistics center.
Rightly KTR is proud on the fact that the products from its own development can be checked on the test benches in the own company under almost realistic conditions of use from 1 to 100,000 Nm. Furthermore, we are
able to compare the calculated data with the results of our theory from our own FEM calculation. Especially for
pumps and compressors the theoretic view of the torsional vibrations is of utmost importance. For many years
we have used a special software ensuring the safe selection of the couplings.

Quality and Safety

KTR was one of the first companies acting in the range of power transmission that reached a DIN ISO 9001
Certification in 1993. In the meantime the Certification has been updated according to ISO 9000-2000. This
does not only refer to the quality of the coupling, but also to the quality and the safety of the necessary preparations from the correct product selection to the reliable handling of orders. KTR actively works in different associations and standard committees. Our competence in these ranges is unquestioned. The latest introduction of
the ATEX Standard in Europe is only one aspect. Additionally, we have further type examination certificates of
different institutes and our couplings meet the requirements according to API 610, 671 and 685.
Reduce the danger to ignite an explosion to a harmless extent!
The product standard ATEX 95 (in the past ATEX 100a) of the European Parliament and the Council for adjustment of legal instructions of the member states for machines and protection systems for the purposive use in
hazardous areas stipulates the rules for the marketing of products that are used in hazardous areas or including hazardous areas.

RIGIFLEX-N / RADEX-N
Steel lamina coupling

For advanced
drive
technology

Backlash-free, torsionally rigid and maintenance-free couplings

RIGIFLEX-N/RADEX-N couplings are backlash-free, torsionally stiff
and maintenance-free all-steel couplings. The laminae which are extremely stiff in torsional direction made of stainless spring steel are
able to compensate for high misalignments with low restoring forces.
Due to the all-steel design both coupling systems can be used on
drives with temperatures up to 280 C.
Both couplings were developed specifically for pump drives. Both
types are in accordance with the standards of API 610 and
RIGIFLEX-N optionally to the standards of API 671.

FEM-optimized laminae design

The steel lamina sets from stainless spring steel were developed on
the basis of FEM calculations. Taking into account the necessary
ability for displacement of the coupling, the optimum design regarding
torque transmission and torsional stiffness was aimed at. The fitted
shape of the steel laminae on the outside diameter is the result of this
optimisation calculation. This type of laminae is used for both coupling
systems.

For RADEX-N the laminae are combined by pins and assembled as

lamina sets. Subject to improvement on the design of RADEX-N
components the laminae are pre-stressed artificially. This process
allows for an increase of torsional stiffness of approx. 30 % and at the
same time prevents the problem of axial vibrations on the spacer.
With RIGIFLEX-N the laminae are connected to the hubs or flanges,
respectively, by positive-locking set screws with no backlash at all.
The torques, displacements and stiffness can be varied by the number
of the layer of individual laminae.
Moreover, most important for the development of RIGIFLEX-N was to
adhere to the standards of API 610 and 671 by securing the spacer by
means of a safety catch.
In case that a lamina fails the spacer remains inside the coupling.
In general the spacer is supplied with a pre-assembled lamina set by
the manufacturer.

Explosion protection use

RIGIFLEX-N and RADEX-N couplings are suitable for the use in
drives in hazardous areas. The couplings are certified according to
EC Standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) and belong to category 2G/2D, are
confirmed and thus suitable for the use in hazardous areas of zone
G1, G2, D21 and D22.
Further details are shown in the chapter about ATEX 95.

Other designs
Assembly
The spacers of RIGIFLEX-N have with drawing screws, serving for
disassembly and assembly. The screws make sure that the adapter
flanges are drawn in the direction of the spacer and consequently slip
off the centering in order to assure a radial disassembly of the spacer
including the laminae sets.
Pulling-off screws

NON SPARKING
Basically the NON SPARKING couplings of KTR are provided with
a safety stop as described in the API 671 standard. In this way it is
assured that sparks cannot be produced by rotating coupling parts,
since the spacer is kept inside the coupling in case that the laminae
fail.
Moreover, the special materials of the parts that are stressed in case
that the laminae fail avoid the production of impact or friction sparks.
The laminae and pins of RIGIFLEX-N are made from MONEL.
The spacers of NON SPARKING designs are basically made from
stainless materials, since they are considered to be generally
recognized as safe in combination with copper alloys.
Due to the special materials used the transmittable torques are
reduced compared to the standard series.

Integrated overload protection

Clamping ring hub

A clamping ring hub with integrated sliding sleeve is

used. If too high torques occur in the drive train, the
clamping ring hub slips through on the shaft with the
sliding sleeve. The shaft is not damaged; the sleeve
serves as wearing part that must be exchanged if
necessary.
The slipping torque can be adjusted through the
tightening torque of the clamping screws.

Explosion protection use

RADEX-N couplings are suitable for the use in drives in hazardous areas. The couplings are certified according to EC Standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) and belong to category 2G/2D, are confirmed and thus suitable for the
use in hazardous areas of zone G1, G2, D21 and D22.
Clamping ring hubs (clamping hub without shoulder bolt only for category 3) used in hazardous areas must be
selected in a way that there is a safety of s = 2 from the peak torque of the unit including all operating parameters to the torque of frictional engagement and to the nominal torque of the coupling.

Assembly and operating advice

Installation:

(please see our mounting instructions KTR standard

47110 and 47410 see www.ktr.com) For the assembly it is
important to make sure that the laminae sets are assembled
free from distortion in axial direction. The screw tightening
torques are shown in the mounting instructions.

RIGIFLEX-N/RADEX-N couplings are designed for

horizontal installation. For vertical installation the spacer
has to be supported (see sketch below).
Please contact:

If the finish bore is machined by the customer, the

concentric and axial running tolerances have to be
observed (see sketch below).

Safety regulations:
The coupling must be selected in a way that the permissible
coupling load is not exceeded in any operating condition.
For that purpose a comparison between the actual loads
with the permissible coupling characteristics has to be
performed.
Balancing:
On request of the customer the couplings can be balanced.
For most applications this is not necessary due to the
accurate machining of the coupling.
Please consult with KTR for any further questions.

The customer must protect rotating parts against unintended

touch (Safety of Machines DIN EN 292 part 2). Please take
precautions that there is a sufficient coupling protection in
case of a fracture of the coupling caused by overload.

Ka: Permissible axial displacement
Kw: Permissible angular displacement
Kr: Permissible radial displacement
The steel lamina couplings are selected in a way that
the maximum permissible angular excursion Kw may
be compensated by every lamina set. Consequently the
maximum permissible angular excursion of two shafts
combined with each other is 2 Kw. The maximum angular excursion for each lamina set is shown in the table
"Technical capacity utilization".

Angular displacement
The permissible radial displacement Kr with distance
g of the coupling elements is
Kr = g tan (Kw)

RADEX-N

The nominal torque TKN of the coupling is:

1. Permissible displacements:

TKN TN Sb St SR
The shock torque TKmax of the coupling is:
TKmax TN A1 St SR
TN = Torque of the machine
SB = Operating factor
SR = Factor of direction
= 1,00 same torque direction
= 1,70 changing torque direction

2.2 Loading by torque shocks

The permissible maximum torque TK max of the coupling
must be at least as big as the sum of the peak torque TS
and the rated torque TN of the machine. This is valid in
case that the rated torque of the machine is superimposed by a shock (e. g. starting of the engine). For
drives with A. C. motors and large masses on the load
side we would recommend calculations by our simulation programme (please consult with our Engineering
Department).
TK max (TN + TS )
3. Drives with periodic torsional vibrations

Radial displacement
In the table Technical data (RADEX-N page 9 and
RIGIFLEX-N page 6) you can see the max. permissible
radial displacements Kr for every size and type based
on the given standard lengths of the flange hollow shaft
as well as the permissible angular displacement Kw of
the coupling elements.
The max. permissible axial displacements Ka for
every size and type are also mentioned in the table
Technical data.
The figures of the permissible displacements
indicated are dependent on each other!
With an increasing axial displacement Ka the
permissible angular displacement Kw decreases
and thus the radial displacement Kr. (See our
mounting instructions www.ktr.com).
2. Selection of the coupling size
Drives without periodic torsional vibrations
For example centrifugal pumps, fans, screw
compressors, etc. The coupling selection requires that
the rated torque TKN and the maximum torque TK max are
reviewed.

For drives subject to dangerous torsional vibrations

(e. g. diesel engines, piston compressors, piston pumps,
generators, etc.) it is necessary to perform a torsional
vibration calculation (please consult with our Engineering Department).
3.1 Loading by rated torque
Taking into account the operating factor SB the permissible rated torque must be at least as big as the rated
torque TN of the machine.
TKN TN Sb St SR
3.2 Passing through resonance
The peak torque TSR arising while passing through
resonance must not exceed the permissible maximum
torque of the coupling TK max.

vibratory torque of the machine TW.

ROTEX Torsionally flexible couplings

For advanced
drive
technology

Description of coupling/Spider types

ROTEX - couplings are characterized by small dimensions, low weight and low mass
moments of inertia yet transmit high torques. Running quality and service life of the
coupling are improved by accurate all-over machining.
Their application is ideal for transmitting torque while damping torsional vibrations and
absorbing shocks produced by the uneven operation of certain prime movers.

Standard spider
tooth flanks crowned

Spiders
An operating temperature range of - 40 to + 100 C ensures perfect operation. Transient temperature peaks up to + 120 C do not cause any damage on the coupling.
Continuous improvement of materials has resulted in a standard spider of 92 Shore A
which offers various advantages over usual polyurethane materials. For higher torques
it is also possible to make use of a spider 95/98 Shore A or 64 Shore D-F.
The spiders are extremely resistant to wear, oil, ozone and ageing. In addition, they are
resistant to hydrolysis (ideal for tropical climates).
The high internal damping protects the drive against dynamic overload.

ROTEX Torsionally flexible couplings

Coupling selection
The ROTEX coupling is selected in accordance with DIN 740 part 2. The coupling has to be dimensioned in a way that the permissible
coupling load is not exceeded in any operating condition. For this purpose the actual loads have to be compared to the permissible
parameters of the coupling.
Drives without periodical torsional vibrations
e. g. centrifugal pumps, fans, screw compressors, etc.
The coupling is selected taking into account the rated torques
TKN and maximum torque TK max.

1.1 Load produced by rated

torque
Taking into consideration
the ambient temperature,
the permissible rated
torque TKN of the coupling
has to correspond at least
to the rated torque TN of
the machine.

TKN TN St

2. Drives with periodical torsional vibrations. For drives subject to high torsional vibrations, e. g. diesel engines, piston
compressors, piston pumps, generators, etc., it is necessary
to perform a torsional vibration calculation to ensure a safe
operation. If requested, we perform the torsional vibration calculation and the coupling selection in our company. For necessary details please see KTR standard 20004.

The permissible maximum torque of the coupling has to correspond at

least to the total of peak

taking into account the
shock frequency Z and
the ambient temperature.

This applies in case if the

rated torque TN of the machine is at the same time subject to
shocks.

For higher operating frequencies f > 10, the heat produced by

damping in the elastomer part is considered as damping power PW.

Knowing the mass distribution, shock direction and shock mode,

the peak torque TS can be calculated.

The permissible damping power PKW of the coupling

depends on the ambient temperature and must not be
exceeded by the damping power produced.

For drives with A. C.-motors with high masses on the load side
we would recommend to calculate the peak driving torque with
the help of our simulation programme.

POLY-NORM

Torsionally flexible couplings

Coupling description
General description
The POLY-NORM coupling is a torsionally flexible, shear type shaft coupling.
It has an axial plug-in design with a unique short over all length. The POLYNORM can be used in nearly all types of machinery and is ideal for the pump
industry.
The POLY-NORM coupling compensates for shaft misalignment of all kinds
and safely transmits the torque.

Function/Design
The coupling consists of two hubs, with fingers separated by elastomeric
elements. The hubs are assembled blindly plugging the hub fingers into each
other axially and the elastomer ring is trapped in a groove between both coupling hubs. The compact POLY-NORM coupling transmits torque with the
elastomer in compression.
Shaft misalignments, vibrations and shock loads are effectively absorbed by
the POLY-NORM.
The coupling is maintenance-free and used in general machinery, the pump
industry and in compressors. Torques of up to 11,000 Nm are stocked in 14
different sizes and 7 designs. In addition to the standard coupling models,
flange drop out center and spacer options are available in many variations.

Explosion-proof use
POLY-NORM Couplings are for use in hazardous environments. The coupling
is approved according to the European EC Standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95)
(appliance category 2 and 3) and can be used in drives of this hazard class.
(Click on www.ktr.com to review the Certificate of Compliance and the operation and assembly instructions).

Variety of Options
The coupling can be adapted to many applications due to the many options
that are possible with the building block arrangement. The POLY-NORM
components of a given model can be mixed and matched with each other
to obtain different shaft distances using the same basic component.

On request, we can provide customized variations of the POLY-NORM to

fit your needs for example, our POLY-NORM overload coupling with
RUFLEX torque limiter. Just ask us !

Assembly Guidelines
During assembly, the coupling halves must be mounted in a way that the coupling hub faces are flush to the end of the shafts. The alignment of the shafts must be adjusted that radial and the angular misalignments are minimal. The life of the coupling and bearings is extended by precise alignment. Steps must be taken to ensure that the alignment will not change during all operating conditions. Shaft misalignments which cannot be avoided must not exceed the figures indicated in the table. Angular and radial misalignments can occur at the
same time but the sum of these misalignments must not exceed the figures set forth in the table above. See the KTR mounting instructions, KTR standard 49510 at our homepage www.ktr.com.

Coupling selection
Selection of the POLY-NORM coupling meets the DIN 740 part 2 specification. The coupling must be sized such that
the coupling rated nominal torque is not exceeded in any operating condition. A comparison must be made between the
application torque vs. the rating of the coupling. The selection process for torsionally flexible shaft couplings is described
in detail in the ROTEX catalogue which can be used for POLY-NORM couplings as well.

POLY Torsionally flexible couplings

Coupling description
General description:
The POLY coupling is a torsionally flexible, shear shaft coupling for general
machinery. It is assembled by axially pluging the hubs into each other and
has excellent dampening characteristics. Its unique features are the flexible
elastomeric elements that are located in both coupling halves.
The POLY advantage A much greater number of flexible elements and thus
a larger effective mass of the elastomer to accept vibration and to dissipate the
heat caused by torsional vibrations when compared to similar competitive couplings with elements only in one half.
Coupling selection
The coupling selection must be done on the base POLY-NORM or ROTEX.
Function/Design
The coupling consists of 2 hubs with fingers that are separated by elastomeric elements which are assembled by axial blind plug-in to each other.
Elastomer elements are placed into the slots of both coupling hubs. Torque
is transmitted in a compact design. Shaft misalignments, vibrations and
shock loads are effectively absorbed by the POLY coupling.
The coupling is maintenance-free and used in general machinery, the pump
industry and in compressors. The Poly coupling handles torque ranges
of up to 63,000 Nm and is stocked in 21 different sizes and 4 designs for
immediate availability. In addition to our standard coupling models, a variety
of flange, drop out center and spacer options are available.

Explosion-proof use
POLY Couplings are for use in hazardous environments. The coupling
is approved according to the European EC Standard 94/9/EC (ATEX 95)
and thereby can be used in drives of this hazard class (appliance category 2
and 3). Click on www.ktr.com to read the Certificate of Compliance, along with
the operation and assembly instructions.

Variation of components
The coupling can be adapted to many applications due to the many options
that are possible with the building block arrangement. The POLY components
of a given model can be mixed and matched with each other to obtain different
shaft distances using the same basic component.

Effects of the European Standard 94/9/EC

Legal changes regarding explosion protection from 1 July 2003 on

The product standard ATEX 95 (formerly ATEX 100a) of the European Parliament and the Council for adjusting the legal stipulations of the member states for appliances and protection systems for purposive use in hazardous areas stipulates the
rules for the introduction of products used in hazardous areas or containing hazardous areas.
Rotating couplings can cause flames due to shock, friction, sparks; also they can be caused due to heating
or electrostatic loads. Flames leading to explosions include electrical and mechanical sparks and also unpermitted high temperatures.

The following basic questions must be clarified in advance:

Yes

Can a hazardous mixture occur due to

distribution within the air?

No

Yes

Is the creation of a dangerous, hazardous

atmosphere possible?

No

No

Are there any inflammable materials?

No explosion

Reduce the danger of an explosion to a safe limit!

Some explanations for the coupling range:

Appliances and components

"Appliances" are machines, operating material, stationary or movable devices, controlling and equipment parts as well
as warning and preventive systems that are used individually or combined to generate, transmit, measure, save, control and
convert energy and to process operating material. They have their own potential ignition sources and can cause an
explosion.
"Components" are those parts that are necessary for the safe operation of appliances and protection systems without
having an autonomous function themselves.

Explosion group/temperature classes

In order to simplify the project work of a unit, the inflammable gases and steams are separated according to their ignition
temperatures in 6 temperature classes (T1 to T6) and according to their ignition disruption power in 3 explosion groups
(IIA, IIB and IIC). The danger increases from explosion group IIA to IIC. (Higher temperature classes and explosion groups
include the lower ones respectively.)
For the temperature classes the following max. permissible surface temperatures of the units are valid
T1 450 C
T2 300 C
T3 200 C

New European right in explosion protection*

The objective of the EC domestic market is to decrease technical trade hindrances in order to enable a free flow of goods
within the EC. For this reason, demands of goods are stipulated within the scope of a harmonisation concept in EC
standards. They guarantee the safety and health of people and objects.
It is absolutely necessary to observe the general requirements of the health and safety protection in order to ensure the
safety of the appliances and devices. These requirements must be carefully observed in order to meet the state of technology of that point of time when the appliances were produced.
The use according to the operating/mounting instructions of the products is a basic condition for the explosion safety of the
units and the protection systems. The requirements must be realised by the manufacturer during the development and
production phase according to Standard 94/9/EC and be accompanied by some respective information material (e. g.
operating and mounting instructions).

Couplings with additionally mounted components being able to produce heat, sparks and static load (e. g. combinations with
brake drums/disks, overload systems like torque limiters, fans, etc.) are generally not approved for the use in hazardous
locations.
A separate examination has to be performed.

Please do not only take into account the rated torque of the coupling concerned, but also the transmittable torques
of the shaft-hub-connection. Such details have to be reviewed by the customer and are subject to his responsibility.
The following are some other facts the power transmission specialist has to consider for ATEX selections/standards:
1. Are any explosion protection measures necessary for the application or is the component in question subject to
the ATEX standard?
2. A sufficient service factor has to be taken into account for the selection.
3. The selection of materials has to be reviewed.
4. The technology of the connection has to be considered (shaft-hub); frictionally engaged
connection or positive connection.
5. It is compulsory to conglutinate the screws as an additional measure of securing while
observing the tightening torque!
6. A marking with ATEX is necessary (for examples see photos).
As an example:
ATEX marking on
POLY-NORM hubs

As an example:
ATEX marking on
ROTEX hubs

The customer is exclusively responsible for all kinds of machining performed subsequently by the customer on unbored or
pilot bored as well as finish machined coupling components and spare parts.
KTR supplies unbored or pilot bored coupling components and spare parts only on special request of the customer. These
parts are additionally marked with the symbol
.
Any claims for warranty resulting from insufficient remachining are not taken over by KTR. Each kind of mechanical
remachining on couplings which are intended for the use in hazardous locations requires a special test/release by KTR.

The user has to observe the following:

All components must be included in the compensation
for potential electrical charges.
Openings at the upper side must not exceed
4 mm, laterally not 8 mm.

Damping ring

The distance to the rotating parts must be at least

5 mm. This must be checked individually.

Bellhousing

You must only disassemble the components after

having stopped the machine.

Foot flange
Damping rod

Please make sure to observe the KTR mounting

instructions for the bellhousings (KTR Standard 41010),
the damping rings (KTR Standard 41030) and the foot
flanges (KTR Standard 41011).

Couplings in explosion-proof applications

For the use of couplings in applications which are subject to a potential dust explosion as well as in mining the operator has to make sure that there is no accumulation of dust between the cover and the coupling. The coupling must not be operated in a dust bottoming.
For covers with unclosed openings on the top light metals should not be used with the use of the couplings on devices of the device
group II (if possible from stainless steel).
For the use of the couplings in mining (device group I M2) the cover must not consist of light metal. In addition it has to be able to
accept higher mechanical loads than with the use of devices of device group II.

Upper side of the cover

Lateral parts of the cover

Circular openings
diameter in mm
4
8

Rectangular openings
lateral length in mm

8

Straight or cranked slot, distance of

the lateral demarcation in mm,
Not permissible
8

The distance between the cover and the parts to rotate has to be at least 5 mm. The cover has to be electroconductive and included in the equipotential bonding.

Painting/coating of couplings
If coated couplings (primer, painting, ) are used in potentially explosive areas, the necessary conductivity and thickness of the
coating has to be considered. With colour painting up to 200 mm an electrostatic load does not have to be expected.
Repeated paintings with a thickness exceeding 200 mm are not permitted for explosion group IIC.

In general
The respective maintenance intervals of the appliances/components must be observed, and when the unit is running watch
out for running noises of the coupling as well as for vibrations.
For further details about hints and provisions for the use in
potentially explosive areas in context with our KTR products
please look at our assembly instructions and type approval
certificates at our homepage www.ktr.com.

MONITEX MONITORING ROTEX

Coupling Monitoring for
ROTEX/ROTEX GS

For advanced
drive
technology

MONITEX measures the twisting angle and the speed of

KTR elastomer couplings ROTEX and ROTEX GS. 1)
A non-contact light barrier scans the coupling to calculate
the compression and respectively the wear of the spider with
no need for a time-consuming disassembly of the drive unit.
The values are shown on the display and are led to an
analog output for analysis.

Following components are

available:
MONITEX hand unit
MONITEX external
sensor
MONITEX data cable

For a permanent monitoring an external sensor can be

connected which allows to include such positions which are
difficult to reach.
In addition to the displayed data an alarm limit can be set. If
the measured twisting angle exceeds the predefined alarm
limit, MONITEX will output an acoustic alarm and activate
the alarm output.
In general all those ROTEX and ROTEX GS couplings
produced by KTR Kupplungstechnik can be tested which
have a well-reflecting surface.

1) A detailed list of the couplings which can be tested is shown in the operating manual
Our assembly instructions KTR-N 49110 are shown on our homepage www.ktr.com.
