MSO202A COMPLEX ANALYSIS
ASSIGNMENT 1
Q1. Represent in polar form and graph in the complex plane:
(i) 3 3i
(ii) (1 + i)/(1 i)
(iii) (2 + 3i)/(5 + 4i).

Q2. Determine the principal value of the argument:

(i) 1 i
(ii) (2 + 3i)/(5 + 4i).

Q3.Find and graph all the roots in the complex plane.

(i) i
(ii) (3 + 4i)1/3 .

Q4. Show that for z = r[cos + i sin ], w = z has the two values,

w1 = r cos + i sin
, w2 = r cos
+ + i sin

Q5. Prove that

|z1 + z2 |2 + |z1 z2 |2 = 2(|z1 |2 + |z2 |2 ).

Q6. Find out if the function w = f (z) is continous at z = 0 where f (0) = 0 and for z 6= 0,
(i) f (z) =

Im (z 2 )
,
|z|

(ii) f (z) =

Im z
.
1 |z|

Q7. Show that if limzz0 f (z) exists then it is unique. Also, show that if f (z) is continuous at
z = a and {zn } is a sequence converging to a, then limn f (zn ) = f (a).
Q8. Show that f (z) = Re z is not differentiable at any point. Also, show that f (z) = |z|2 is
differentiable only at z = 0 and hence it is nowhere analytic.
