A Long History of Diversity:
1. In a paragraph, explain how the early history [prior to 1000 AD] was highly diversified.
China ruled Northern Vietnam. The Chinese art, technology, political ideas and ethnic
beliefs had shaped Vietnams culture. Buddhism and Hinduism spread from India and it
also influenced much of Southeast Asia. Even with all these influences, Southeast Asia
still kept some of their own traditions like equal roles for women.
2. How was the area of Southeast Asia organized and governed during their early history?
The Europeans started to arrive in Southeast Asia then the Spanish took over.
Colonialism was beginning to change Southeast Asia.
3. How did this change from 1300-1800?
This changed from 1300-1800 because Colonialism grew to have around 100,000 people.
Colonialism and its aftermath
1. What is colonialism?
Colonialism is the practice or policy of having political control over another country. The
colonial rulers had set up centralized bureaucratic governments with routines,
regulations and rules to follow. The aftermath was by the 20 th century Europeans had
made all Southeast Asia except for Siam, into colonies.

The first way colonialism changed Southeast Asia is colonial rulers set up centralized,
bureaucratic governments with a set of rules, routines and regulations. The second way
colonialism changed Southeast Asia is Europeans forced them to produce commodities so
that it would help Europes economy. The last way that colonialism changed Southeast
Asia is colonialism had sparked nationalism.

The Japanese put Southeast Asians into some leadership roles. I think this gave them a
valuable learning experience.
7. After WWII, Southeast Asia gained their independence differently. Briefly explain
this statement with examples.
After WWII, Southeast Asia gained their independence differently because they gained
it peacefully. Indonesia had to fight for 4 years to gain their independence. Indonesia
suffered and turned into the Vietnam War.
An Uneven Economy
1. Southeast Asia has a traditional economy. Explain that statement with specific
examples to back it up.
Southeast Asia depended on agriculture for income. At the time, rice was their biggest
food crop and they made an income from that. The Vietnam War destroyed many roads
and factories. But Vietnam built industry and helped with foreign investment and trade.
2. What is ASEAN? How has it helped to create a region within a region?
ASEAN is the association of Southeast Asia Nations. This is an alliance that promotes
economic growth and peace for the region. The other four Southeast Asia countries did
not join ASEAN until 1995.
A Rich Mosaic of Culture
1. How is this area a mosaic of religions? Identify the different religions and where they
are practiced.
The different religions are Buddhism, Catholic, Muslim and Hinduism.
2. Are there more rural or urban communities in this area?
The communities were more rural and they lived traditionally.
3. Interpret the picture of page 709. What does this scene show about diversity in
Malaysia?
In the picture, some women are dressed more heavily than other women. That is because
of their religion and beliefs.

a. Micronesia: tiny islands
b. Melanesia: black islands
c. Polynesia: a group of many islands together.
d. Subsistence activities: These are activities which the family produces only clothing,
food and shelter.

e. Copra: Dried meat of coconuts.


f. Taro: A plant with a starchy root and it was important to the region because it was a
major crop.

The type of migration that is happening within Oceania today is rapid urban growth. This has
led to sprawling shantytowns and facilities. City dwellers are giving up their traditional ways
of live. This change is helping Oceania today because Oceania can be linked to the rest of
the world.
3. How did contact with Europeans and Americans affect the societies of the Pacific Islands?
Contact with Europeans and Americans spread languages and religions.
4. What is distinctive about Oceania in terms of its languages?
Oceania has over 1,100 different languages.
5. How has modern technology both helped and harmed Oceania?
Modern technology has helped Oceania because it helped them be linked to the rest of the
world. It also helped to spread culture, languages and religions with the rest of the world.

What prevents Australia from benefiting completely from its mining industry is many
deposits can lie.

The treaty of Waitangi, this treaty gave them control over New Zealand.
3. What is the major activity conducted in Antarctica?
The major activity conducted in Antarctica is manufacturing and service.
