Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.

Equipment is important because you need items like a tripod,
camera, lighting, sound, green screen. For example, a camera was
the most important element to my production because if I didnt
have a camera I couldnt have created anything. A tripod was really
important for my production because it made it look smooth and not
jumpy. If I couldnt pay for this, these there would be no point in
planning the production and employing actors because there would
be nothing to record with or it would be of a bad quality.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Time is really important because you need to plan it so that you can
meet deadlines, for example, if you dont organise your time
efficiently, you can easily miss a deadline. This would be really bad
because for the Creative media course because your work wouldnt
get marked and you would be given a Fail grade for that unit. In the
film industry, if you dont reach your deadline it could hold up the
editing and final approving so that when the film is actually
released, it could be late to cinemas and the people who have
worked on the film could lose out on money.
Furthermore, time is important when checking the availability of
equipment because you would need to do order equipment ahead of
time, before your production so that you can use it for the time that
you film it and dont leave it until the last minute. You need to also
check that the people you are employing, e.g. the crew and actors
are available for that time so that you are able to create the
production. It could also cost more money to try to hire out actors
and equipment with little time left because they would charge more
with less time.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
It is important that all the facilities needed for the production are
available. For example, the equipment must be available, such as
the cameras, tripods, locations, editing softwares and facilities, e.g.
access to green screens. These must be available before filming
because you can't film if you dont have anywhere to shoot it. There
are often specific facilities you need for certain productions; you
would need a green screen if your production requires one, which
means you must hire it out before so that you have it in time for
filming. You must also have a location, e.g. somewhere outside
which often you dont need to hire out, or a house which needs to
arranged in advance, unless it is your own house or a studio which
you have to hire out. This needs to be paid for and organised so that
you have it before you can film and you know that it is available,
otherwise, you wouldnt have a location.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,

Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
Original materials is the clips of individual videos and takes that you
get whilst filming your production.
It is important to have original material because you will not have
any issues with copyright for the clips because original material is
evidence that you filmed it yourself as it shows that it was filmed by
your crew.
Archive and library materials: This is recorded footage that has
been compiled together and edited as files before creating the
actual video production. However, to use this, you must get
permission for it because otherwise you could experience copyright
errors. Examples of archive and library materials in adverts is in the
Cow and Gate complete care advert because multiple babies are
shown laughing in a sequence of videos, these would have been
compiled together as archive and library materials, however, they
would have got permission for these files since it is shown on TV.
These are really important because they make the editing process
easier and are needed for the production of a TV advert to put clips
together and make the clips flow together better.
Sound Library: The sound library is a collection of the sound that will
be used in the advert, for example, sound effects, voice overs and
music. The purpose of a TV advert is to advertise the product and
sell it, therefore the audience must be given information on the
product and the easiest and more effective way to do that is by
using a voice over to give the details on the product, this helps
them understand the product and sell more so the sound library is
quite an important material in TV advertising.
Internet: The internet is good for research other productions for
ideas and to see what other adverts there are. It is free, fast and
there is an endless amount of sources for research. The internet is
really important because it allows people to do market research,
finding out how similar products are advertised, this is needed and
is really vital before creating an advertisement.
Interviews: Interviews are important because it is a good method for
researching as you find out information about a certain topic but
also peoples opinions on it, e.g. finding out about the mascara for
my advert I could have interviewed people who use it to find out
what is good about the product.
Audio: Audio is really important, particularly in advertising because
audio gives people details on the product and would make them

want to buy it.

Script: http://cmphollysmith.weebly.com/l01.html
A script is important because it is really useful as it gives you lots of
details about how to shoot your production, what angles from, what
props are used, the sound and lighting and details on what the
actors should be doing. Whilst shooting my production the script
helped me because I could tell my actress that she needed to wear
a dressing gown at one point with tissues around her and mascara
running down her face to show that she is crying.
Photo-library materials: The photo- library materials are all the
photos taken, photos can be used in documentary style adverts, e.g.
charity adverts to help the audience sympathise to the charity, or
having good looking photos of a product to give people a positive
image of the product and make it look good.
Costumes: costumes will be decided during the planning of the
music video, after the plan has been made then costume designers
will be able to make them or If the clothes are just causal then a
budget will be set aside for them and they will be bought by one of
the crew members. The choice of costume will depend on the effect
that you want to give and it is important that the costume suits the
story line and the whole feel of the video as a whole.

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
This is an example of a location recce. It is really important because

it tells you where you're filming with an image of it, the address,
nearest bus and train station and lots of information on lighting and
noise which is good because it helps you find out whether it is a
suitable location to shoot your production at. I shot this location at
my house so I didnt have to hire anywhere out, however, If I had
shot this in a studio, I would have to hire it out before filming.

There are many risks of shooting in different locations. Examples are

that the weather could be bad causing hazards, e.g. snow could
cause you to slip if shooting outside or driving there and cause an
accident. Also raining, could affect driving, making the roads
slippery. Furthermore, when filming if raining, the equipment could
get wet which could cause the camera to break.
If you chose a location that is too far away, it could cost a lot of
money to get there as public transport can be expensive and diving
a car costs petrol money, therefore it is probably best to get a
location that isnt too far away.
Sourcing
I would chose to hire out Meadow farm studios In Henley because it
is close to where I live, easy to drive to or get the train and walk
there without it being too expensive.

This is the first great western website so that you can look at train
tickets to see prices to different locations as trains can be quite cost
effective. https://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/?gclid=cpjvula7sucfynjtaoddqkarq
This is the website for Loddon Cars as it can often be easiest to get
a taxi to your location.

Codes of
practice and

Location permissions
Clearances

regulation:

Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is vital to check your location before filming to see that you have
permission to film there because if not you could get into trouble
with the owners and wont be able to use the footage or wont be
able to film.
Clearances allow you to use things in your production for your
company and product advertised, e.g. brand name, logo, music,
images and your script. If you don't have clearances it might mean
you can't use these and would have to change your production
plans.
Copy right is really important because it means that no one can take
their idea or take their footage, it gives you rights to create your
production and is really crucial when making an advertisement
because anyone could use logos or footage if it wasn't copyrighted.
Health and safety precautions should always be taken because there is always
anything being a safety hazard, for example it could be something as simple as
tripping up over furniture or heavy equipment like lighting, cameras or
tripods could fall on you or could be in the way and easy to trip up on. Making
sure precautions are taken to stop the hazards will reduce any injuries which
might lower the risk of losing money through compensation.
Insurance is very important because it protects the interest of people by providing
the certainty of payment, e.g. if you insure an expensive camera and it breaks, the
insurance company will replace it. In film productions you could insure the set
and location, e.g. actors and actresses, equipment, rushes and locations because
there are often damages that could happen to them so this ensures that they will
be replaced by paying insurance companies.

(Choose the one that relate to your production only)
Regulatory
Ofcom
bodies:
Press Complaints Commission

(PCC) Advertising Standards

Authority (ASA)
Pan European Game
Information (PEGI)
Entertainment Software Rating
Board (ESRB)
British Board of Film
Classification (BBFC)

Importance
Ofcom is a government approved regulatory for the
telecommunications, broadcasting, and postal industries of the UK. It
shields the public from offensive material in the media. The rules
advertisers must follow are not to offend audiences, e.g. copyright,
profanity, localism or regionalism. Their jobs require reviewing adverts
before they are aired to ensure they are appropriate for audiences and not
distressing or offensive in any way. They will be approved and put on
television on the certain times they saw as appropriate. Some adverts
will be aired later, e.g. a slightly distressing advert like an advert about
road safety that might feature someone getting hit with a car or a
smoking advert might be shown after 1pm to reduce the amount of
children that see it. Ofcom have to review any complaints about
anything shown on the television and check them to see if their
complaint is justified and remove it from being shown or if there are
lots of complaints about a single advert, it will be removed.
Ofcom is really important because it ensures your advert is able to be
shown on TV without complaints, that it is suitable and it is really
important to follow the Ofcom guidelines before creating the advert
because then you know it will be aired on TV and the production wont
be a waste of time or money.

Trade
unions:

Producers Alliance for Cinema

and Television (PACT),
National Union of Journalists
(NUJ)
Broadcasting Entertainment
Cinematograph and Theatre
Union (BECTU)

Importance
Trading Unions are organisations that have a purpose to protect and improve pay
but also their conditions of employment. They have a campaign which includes
Laws and policies that can benefit workers.
The Producers alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT) is in force so that the
UK trade represent and promote independent films, television, digital, and
childrens animation media corporations. Included in this are being able to access
a library of contracts and advice on documents that can help with business. This

is important to advertising because it represents television which includes

advertisement and promotes it.

Trade
associations:

Entertainment and Leisure

Software Publishers
Association (ELSPA)
British Interactive Media
Association (BIMA)

Importance
The British Interactive Media Association is important because it
supports and promotes the British digital media industry, rewards
great work, encourages the next generation. It is really important
because trade associations have an important role in promoting the best way,
supporting companies to become more competitive and increase effective public
policy. They have lots of possibilities to co-ordinate when discussing terms with
the governments and are easily able to quickly distribute messages about the
governments policy to other members.
