PSTAT 109 - Statistics For Economics: Lab Worksheet For Week 8

This document contains instructions for a statistics lab worksheet with 6 questions. The questions cover topics like finding marginal distributions and means from a joint probability distribution, computing expectations, variances, and correlations. It also involves generating samples from normal and binomial distributions to perform hypothesis tests and construct confidence intervals. Additional questions involve analyzing grade data from an Excel file by making scatter plots, computing correlations, adding trendlines, and testing claims about student exam scores.

(a) Enter this data into Excel and find the marginal distributions of X and Y . Find
E(X) and E(Y ).
(b) We need to compute E(XY ). Construct two 2-dimensional tables side by side,
one with the values of the product and the other with the corresponding probabilities. Now compute E(XY ) and Cov (X, Y ).
2. Using the Analysis Toolpak, generate a sample of size n = 20 from a Normal distribution with mean 50 and variance 10. Then construct a 99% tconfidence interval for
. You may use Excels function T.INV.
3. Test the hypothesis that = 50 for the data in the previous question using = 0.05.
Use a two-sided alternative.
4. Generate a sample of size 200 from a Binomial distribution with n = 60 trials and
probability of success p = 0.3. Construct a 95% tconfidence interval for the theoretical mean . Is the theoretical mean inside the confidence interval?
5. Generate a sample of size 200 from a Binomial distribution with n = 100 trials and
probability of success p = 0.18. Test the hypothesis that the mean of this sample
is equal to the mean of the sample from question 4. Use = 0.05 and a two-sided
alternative.
6. The Excel file grades.xlsx contains the scores obtained by 25 students on the midterm
and final exams of a certain class.
(a) Make a scatter plot of the midterm scores against the final scores. When you click
on the button labeled Scatter, select the button from the menu titled Scatter
with Only Markers.
(b) Compute the sample correlation of the data.

(c) Clicking once on any data point in your scatter plot. This can be tricky because
there are many elements of the chart you can click on and edit. You will know
that you have selected the data point when all of the data points are selected.
Once you have selected the data points, right click on any one data point and
choose Add a Trendline from the menu.
(d) This feature fits the best straight line which can be used to forecast the score
of a random student on the final exam given his score on the midterm exam.
Does the line provide a reasonable fit to the data?
(e) The professor of the class claims that a students score on the final is, on average,
about the same as his score on the midterm. Is this professors claim reasonable?
Briefly explain.
