For Creative Scriptwriting, Mr. Bustillos assigned a project, in which we created a ten minute
long news segment, in which we covered the weather, sports and other related categories that are related
to media. As we prepared for our script, I have realized that with this project comes seriousness and
maturity. Working with people who often make you laugh, helps us develop humorous news stories, but
also takes away from the new quality that we are supposed to achieve when creating the news segment.
Adding onto group work, I notice working with others enhances creative ideas as they are
constantly being embellished on, but also takes away from the structure that is needed when creating a
serious newscast. When working with five people I believe having a leader is necessary, and have
realized without a leader, the final product of a news script/show is not as professional. During the
recording stage of the show every cut and fade had to be right in time in order for the show to look
professional. It was extremely challenging to have all of the cuts right on time, especially with limited
communication between the floor manager and technical director. Without knowing what camera to have
ready, the cuts become uneven and do not match up with the news anchors. When this happens the news
anchors have awkward pauses and the quality of the show diminishes.
This assignment also helped me realize how careful and precise an effective newsroom has to
create and deliver stories. With working in a place where the equipment replicates an accurate newsroom,
any sudden flaw in either recording or reading lines takes away from the quality of the newscast. This
assignment has also helped me understand the importance of conveying information to a great audience
simply because of the precision needed to create an effective newscast.
