This document contains 6 questions from past exams on the topic of kinetics of rigid bodies and Newton's second law. The questions involve calculating velocities, times, distances, tensions and angular accelerations for various mass-pulley systems and rotating bodies. Additional information like moments of inertia, radii of gyration, masses and friction are provided for each system. The questions could be solved using principles of work, energy or Newton's second law depending on the specific scenario.

Class Tutorial 13: Kinetic of Rigid Bodies: Newton Second Law
Question 1 (Exam 2014) The system is released from rest. The moment of inertia 2 of the pulley is 0.04 kg-m . a) If the slanted surface is smooth, determine the magnitude of the velocity of the 10N weight when it has fallen 2 m. (1.62) b) If now the surface is not smooth, the coefficient of kinetic friction between the 5-N weight and the slanted surface is k = 0.3. Determine the magnitude of the velocity of the 10-N weight when it has fallen 2 m. (1.48)
Question 4 (Exam 2009)
The spool in figure Q4 has a mass of 50 kg and radius of gyration k0 = 0.28 m. If block A of mass 20 kg is released from rest, determine the distance the block must fall in order for the spool to have angular velocity = 5 rad/s. Also, what is the tension in the cord while the block is in motion? Neglect the mass of the cord. Give some comments on the possibility of solving the problem by using Principle of Work and Energy. (0.301 m)
ri = 0.2 ro = 0.3
Question 2 (Exam 2013)
The moment of inertia of the pulley in Figure Q4 about 2 its axis is I = 0.005 kg-m . If the 1-kg mass A is released from rest, how far does it fall in 0.5 s? (0.818 m)
Question 3 (Exam 2010)
The 320 kg flywheel of a small hoisting engine is used to bring up the weight has a radius of gyration of 600 mm. If the power is cut off when the angular velocity of the flywheel is 100 rpm clockwise, determine the time required for the system to come to rest. Determine also the time required for the angular velocity of the flywheel 2 to be reduced to 40 rpm clockwise. (-2.01 rad/s , 5.21 s, 3.13 s)
Question 5 (Exam 2007)
As shown in Figure Q6, the velocity of the 8 kg cylinder is 0.3 m/s at a certain instant. What is its speed v after dropping an additional 1.5 m? The mass of the grooved drum is 12 kg and the radius of gyration is k = 210 mm and the radius of the groove is ri = 200 mm. The frictional moment at O is a constant 3 Nm. (3.01 m/s)
Question 6 (Exam 2006)
If the frictional moment at the pivot O in Figure 8 is 2 Nm, determine the angular acceleration of the grooved drum, which has a mass of 8 kg and a radius of gyration kO = 225 mm. (0.622 rad/s)
