LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

SEMINAR REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

SEMINAR TOPIC:

Planning Assessment and Accreditation

PARTICIPANTS NAME: Chris Hainsworth

1. What were the significant learning points for you this seminar?
Debbie St. Jean provided an overview of planning and assessment at the College.
She explained how the mission, vision, and strategic directions influence the College
and campus plans. Within the plans, divisions write three year goals with annual
objectives to meet those goals. At the College, our institutional effectiveness
structure evaluates how well the plans we implemented helped us achieve the
desired outcomes through SLOA, ESOA, and Mission Goal Assessments. The
significant learning point for me was working through the planning activity and
understanding what mission goal assessments are.

Dr. Judi Sciple led a discussion of accreditation at Delaware Tech which included an
explanation of the purpose of accreditation, the ten year accreditation cycle, and the
MiddleStates standards of accreditation. Her talk was followed by her presenting two
scenarios in which we were required to take a position on various accreditationrelated issues. The significant learning point for me was that meeting institutional
accreditation standards is essential for financial reasons. It is necessary to ensure
that Delaware Tech can continue to receive federal financial aid funds. If a college
were to lose their institutional accreditation it could mean that a students degree
could be lost or devalued and the community could lose a resource of the
community college.
2. In what ways is each learning point supportive or relevant to your ideas of
leadership?
Leaders must look for ways to be more effective as a department or an institution.
The planning process provides a framework to set department goals and objectives
so that they can be linked to institutional goals and objectives. The outcomes

assessments are valuable as a tool to identify where improvements are needed

which helps us see where and when we need to do things differently.

3. Identify a way to apply each of these learning points to your current role in the
College.
I am very familiar with programmatic accreditation and there are many parallels
between programmatic and institutional accreditation processes. Meeting
accreditation standards is about providing a quality education in that you must
demonstrate that you have developed an infrastructure with certain processes in
place that meet standards in order to be able to provide the education. The seminar
highlighted the importance of making clear links in the planning, budgeting and
assessment cycle for the purposes of accreditation.
