Dakota State University

College of Education
Lifting Unit
Name:

Joshua Licht

Grade Level: High School

School: Higley High School
Date:

4/8/15

Time:8:20-9:10 AM
Reflection from prior lesson:
Last lesson the students got a lot better in the lifting form for bench. The students learned how specific
lifting needs to be and learned that it takes a little motivation from others to succeed while lifting. The
struggle for the students was how much weight to add to the bar so that it was hard enough to need focus,
yet easy enough for them to properly attempt the lift without injuring themselves or anyone else around
them.
Standards:
Arizona State Standards
-Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities
-Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the
learning and performance of physical activities.
-Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson the students will be able to properly demonstrate how to power clean.

Materials Needed:
Gym clothes, close toed shoes, and weights.
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:
This class is made up of both boys and girls ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade. The level of skill varies
greatly from student to student. The students in this class come from all different nationalities, and it is
extremely diverse. There are no kids in the class with disabilities.

Getting Attention
Attendance will be taken and students will dress out.
Three students will be picked to help get the weight room set up for todays lift.
The students will meet in the weight room and we will quickly go over what was covered
the previous day.
Content Delivery (35 minutes)
When the demonstration is finished I will start the students off by splitting them into two
groups.

Each group will start off with the first two phases of the lift. The two phases are the lifts off
and high pull. Once each student has done those phases two too three times I will allow them
to do the entire lift.
The entire lift has four phases, the lift off, the high pull, the catch and squat, and the final
phase of standing up.
Phases one and two have to be mastered before students can add phases three and four.
Closure (10 Minutes)
Go over the things that were taught and give the students an idea of what will be done the
following day.
Send students into the locker room to get dressed out.

B. Assessments Used
Assessment will be done in the form of visual observations, and verbal and visual directions will be given
when a student is doing an activity incorrectly.
C. Differentiated Instruction
The students that are performing any fundamentals incorrectly will be shown the correct form we will make
sure that the kids are learning the desired technique. In order to allow for safety, the students will not be
allowed to lift until I give the instructions of ready lift. This way the students are all going at the same time
and not at random.
