Chapter 10: Photosynthesis
This chapter is as challenging as the one you just finished on cellular respiration. However,
conceptually it will be a litle easier because the’ concepts learned in Chapter
‘hemiosmosis and an electron transport sytem—will play a central roe in photosynthesis.

13. Linear electron flow is, fortunately, easier than it looks. It isan electron transport chain,

[As a review, note that the light reactions store chemical emery in PIP and
NADP which shuttle the energy to the carbohydrate-producing OIViC\ cycle.
Concept 103 The Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to comvert CO> 0 sugar
“The Calvin cycle is « metabolic pathway in which each step is governed by an enzyme, much ike the
Citic aci cycle fom cellular respiration, However, keepin mind thatthe Calvin cycle uses energy Gin
{he form of ATP and NADPH) and is therefore anaboli; in contrast, cellular respiration is catabolic
and releases energy thats used to generate ATP and NADH.

25, Examine Figure 10.18 while we tally carbons. This figure is designed to show the production of
‘one net G3P. That means the Calvin cycle must be tumed thes times. Each tum will require 8
starting molecule of ribulose bisphosphate, a five-carbon compound. This means we tart with
5 carbons diseibuted in three RuBPs. After fixing three carbon dioxdes using the
enzyme (UIIXSCQ __, the Calvin cycle forms six G3Ps with a tot of _]%
carbons. Atthis point the net guin carbons is_2 _, or one net G3P molecule.
