Tutorial 1: Basic Concept of Thermodynamics
1. A 3 kg of plastic tank that has a volume of 0.2 m 3 is filled with liquid water. Assuming the
density of water is1000 kg/m3, determine the weight of the combined system (Answer: 1991 N)
2. Determine the mass and the weight of the air contained in a room whose dimensions are 6 m x
6 m x 8 m. Assume the density of the air is 1.16 kg/m3 (Answer: 334.1 kg, 3277 N)
3. The absolute pressure in water at a depth of 5 m is read to be 145kPa. Determine:
(a) The local atmospheric pressure (Answer: 96 kPa)
(b) The absolute pressure at a depth of 5 m in a liquid whose specific gravity is 0.85 at
the same location (Answer: 137.7kPa)
4. The water in a tank is pressurized by air, and the pressure is measured by a multifluid
manometer as shown in figure below. Determine the gage pressure of air in the tank if h 1=0.2 m,
h2=0.3 m and h3=0.46 m. Take the densities of water, oil and mercury to be 1000 kg/m 3, 850
kg/m3 and 13600 kg/m3 respectively (Answer: 56.9 kPa)
5. A vertical piston cylinder device contains a gas at a pressure of 100 kPa. The piston has a mass

the piston. Determine the local atmospheric pressure and the mass of the weight that will double
the pressure of the gas inside the cylinder. (Answer: 95.7 kPa, 115.3 kg)
6. A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston cylinder device. The piston has a mass of 4
kg and a cross-sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring above the piston exert a force of 60
N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure inside the cylinder.
(Answer: 123.4kPa)
7. Determine the Boundary Work Done, Wb by a gas during an Expansion Process if the pressure
and volume value at various states are measured to be as follows :
310 kPa and 1 L; 300 kPa and 1.1 L; 280 kPa and 1.2 L; 260 kPa and 1.4 L; 230 kPa and 1.7 L;
210 kP and 2 L (Answer: 520kJ)
8. A nitrogen gas contains in a piston cylinder device with known mass of 0.25 kg at initial
pressure

condition
to a final pressure of 100 kPa. Determine the boundary work done involve during this expansion
process ( Given Gas Constant for Nitrogen, RN2 = 0.2968 kJ/kgK. ) (Answer: 7.65 kJ)
