Color Model Outcrop

This document describes creating a color model from outcrop images. The steps include: 1. Taking digital photos of an excavation site and extracting pseudo-logs from the images. 2. Displaying the images as vertical panels in 3D. 3. Translating the borehole bitmaps to color intervals. 4. Interpolating a color model using the color data and an inverse-distance algorithm.

Introduction
This case study shows how images can be used to create a color model. The study area is an excavation
in Nicosia, Cyprus where a series of digital photographs were made from the inside of a rectangular
excavation. Pseudo-boreholes were created by cutting out strips from these images and saving the strips
within the Bitmaps table of the Borehole Manager. These strips were then converted to colors and
modeled with the color-modeling algorithm option in RockWorks.

Step 1: Gather the Images

A series of digital photographs of the interior walls were taken from inside the excavation. These images
were then stitched together into four panoramas. Twelve 200 pixel-wide pseudo-logs were then extracted
from the panoramas and saved within the RockWorks Borehole Manager bitmaps table as summarized
within the following diagram.

Step 2: Display the Images as Vertical Panels

The four panoramas were then plotted in 3D using the RockWorks Imagery / Vertical Images -> 3D
Panels program.

Step 3: Translate the Borehole Bitmaps to Colors

The borehole bitmaps were then converted to color intervals via the Colors / Import / Raster Imagery ->
Colors program. The borehole color intervals were then plotted as 3D striplogs.

Step 4: Interpolate the Color Model

Finally, a color model was created based on the data within the color table, using the Inverse-Distance
Anisotropic modeling algorithm. The model is displayed with "G=Color" and using All Voxels. The
example below also includes the 3D logs.

The .MOD file which represents interpolated colors can be displayed in 3D fence panels, in 2D profile
and section panels, as plan maps, and more, using the tools in the Colors menu.
