Tutorial 6: Che503 Fluid Flow

This document contains 4 questions regarding fluid flow and power calculations for different mixing tank systems. Question 1 asks to determine the dimensionless Pi parameters involved in calculating pressure drop along a pipe. Question 2 asks to determine the power required to operate a disk turbine mixer in an alkaline solution. Question 3 asks to analyze geometric similarities and determine power for a propeller mixer in a biodiesel solution. Question 4 asks to determine geometric similarities, flow type, power, and scaled parameters for a yogurt drink mixing system.

CHE503 FLUID FLOW

Question 1
Assume the pipe is a smooth pipe. Using Buckingham Pi
theorem, determine the dimensionless P parameters
involved in the problem of determining pressure drop
along a straight, horizontal circular pipe. We are
interested in the pressure drop per unit length, Dpl,
along the pipe
D

Dpl = (p1-p2)/l

Question 2
A disk turbine with six flat blades is installed in a
middle of a vertical baffled tank of
2.5 m in
diameter. The turbine is 0.7 m in diameter and it is
positioned 0.7 m above the bottom of the tank. The
width of the baffle is 100mm. The width of the turbine
blades are 135 mm is rotating at 200 rpm. The tank is
filled to a depth of 2 m with aqueous solution of 60%
NaOH at 80C, which has a viscosity of 0.12 Ns/m 2 and
a density of 1500 kg/m3. Determine the required power
to operate the above system.

Question 3
Biodiesel with a density of 900 kg/m 3 and viscosity of 80
mN s/m2 is agitated by a propeller mixer of 2 m diameter in
a tank of 9.12 m diameter, and the liquid depth is 9.12
m. The propeller is situated 2 m above the bottom of the
tank. During the experiment, the value of K, b and c is
1x10-4, 1 and 2 respectively.

1. Analyze the geometric similarities of the tank.

2. Determine the power required to rotate the propeller at
2.5 Hz.

Question 4
Fresh mango juice and yogurt ingredients are mixed together with
water in a laboratory scale mixing tank to produce a mango yogurt
drink. The viscosity of the yogurt drink is 1.5 mN s/m 2 and the density is
1050 kg/m3. The solution is agitated by propeller mixer of 0.1 m
diameter in a tank of 0.3 m diameter. The propeller is situated 0.2 m
below of the liquid surface.
1. Determine the geometric similarities of the tank.
2. Determine the flow type of the solution for a rotational speed of 120
rpm in the laboratory scale mixing tank.
3. Determine the power which the propeller must impart to the solution.
Take power number (Np) is 0.5.
4. Determine the Reynolds number, Froude number and the power
consumption if the linear scale of equipment increased by a factor of
10 and the rotational speed is assuming to be constant.
