Physics of music: Accordion

The accordion was invented by a Friedrich Buschmann but later improve with button by Cyrillus
Damian. The accordion is use in many type of music most commonly use in folk music. The accordion is
similar to the harmonica which is a free reed instrument as well. When an instrument has reeds inside it
means that the instruments need air to cause a vibration which then makes sounds. Since the accordion is
a free-reed instrument usually means that there are more than one reed inside and this result in each reed
producing different sounds and different pitches. Accordions create different waves when they are played
that would result in the type note the is being produce in terms of its frequency and amplitude. When the
bellows are being pull and push there is air being push through the reed making sound that is being
vibrating. The accordion frequency ranges anything from 174 Hz its lowest note to 3520 Hz its highest
note.An accordion has many different accordions in each branch such Diatonic Accordions, Concertinas,
Chromatic Accordions, and Piano accordions.
Diatonic Accordions originally were made to have one row of 10 buttons on the right side this
accordion was originated in Germany and was later modernized around the world. The Italian Diatonic
which was made in Italy, Three rows Diatonic, Helikon Accordion which was developed to create a
deeper or to produce a tuba like pitch, Shand Accordion was developed in Scotland. Diatonic Accordions
are usually used by many folk and dance groups, because of their great sound output, simplicity, light
weight and low cost.
Concertina Accordions are actually the most unique type of accordions, the usually have different
shapes and have very intriguing designs. In the family of Concertinas there is also The English

Concertina, German Concertina, Anglo-Concertina, Duet Concertina, and Bandoneon. The English
Concertina has a hexagonal or octagonal shape this accordion was originally made to be able to
compose legato similar to violin melodies and differs from the rest of the Concertina accordions, because
the other accordion were German based instruments and were made to make more than one sounds such
as being able to make diatonic sounds as well a deep sounds like a Chromatic Accordion.
Piano Accordions are is the most popular of all accordions the have been and are still currently
one of the highest rate instruments that are being purchased. The piano accordion has a piano keyboard on
its right hand and left-hand has anywhere from eight to 120 chord buttons making this instrument very
flexible when it comes to trying to produce a specific melody.
Although there are many different types of accordions, all accordions produce sounds around the
same range of frequency, all reefs inside an accordion are made out of wood but accordion makers tend to
sometimes experiment and use other material such as metal, copper and they will also try to change the
sound by adding more or taking aways a lot of the keys that are in the accordion. Different sounds will be
produce in the accordion when taking keys away and this is because there will more space for air to fill in
the reefs that produce the sound once the accordion is stretched or closed.
