This document summarizes a survey conducted to understand the connection between video games and community service. The survey found that 55% of students play games 1-3 days a week, 60% had completed their required community service hours, and 61% said they would be found helping their community more than gaming. The most popular genres were first-person shooter, role-playing/MMO games, and horror/mystery games. The results suggest that video games do not have as strong an impact on laziness or violence as commonly portrayed by media. While a rating system informs parents, better education of parents on ratings may be more important.

Video Games and

Community
Service
created by: J Macias,
Alicia T, Eric N, Carlos C.,

Why did we choose this

topic?
Video games often get a bad rap
thanks to the media saying that
people who play videogames are
violent or lazy. This survey was
suppose to work to shed some more
light on that idea.

How Media has Changed Gaming in

Positive Ways

What Type of Genre?

Top Three Genre in Video Games as shown by surveys
1.FPS/Action

2.RPG/MMO
3.Horror & Mystery

Questions Asked:

Do You play Video Games?

What is your preference in consoles?
What kind of video games do you tend to play?
What are the usual ratings for the games you buy?
Who is in charge of buying your games?
Do your parents understand the ratings system for games?
Is there a set of rules where your parents regulate the time you spend playing
and the time you are serving the community?
How many days a week do you spend playing video games?
Have you completed the required 120 community service hours? If not, how
many have you completed?
Would you be found playing video games more or being more active in the
community?

Can Video Games make people lazy or

violent?
If the claims made by popular media are true, then America
should have almost 70% of its citizens running around acting
out or doing absolutely nothing besides playing games. But is
it safe to say that violent games cause violent behavior or do
video games in general cause laziness?

Some results

Some results cont.

Results we Obtained were...

Most of people either had a PS3 or Xbox 360.
Many people are not owners of the next gen consoles, instead only a few have
gaming pcs or Ps4, even xbox 1 is not common around the results.
Although most of the surveys
showed that people thought
positively of the next gen
consoles, very few are able to
afford it on this community.

What did we find?

-Our results showed us that 55% of people of various grade students play games and 60% of the
people surveyed had completed their community service hours
-55% of gamers play 1 to 3 days a week
-61% do not have rules set by their parents for their gaming time
-61% of the people surveyed admitted that they are more likely to be found helping the community
than gaming
-And the most popular rated games are E rated then T
-The most popular genre is first person shooter

So in the conclusion, videogames are not as impactful on

peoples lives as the media portrays them to be.

What can we do with this

info?
With this information, the truth that video
games don't cause people to be lazy can be
put to rest. The students in the survey have
proven that video games do not dictate how
they spend their time. There has also yet to
be a solid argument on how video games
cause violence.

Outside Studies
Video Games have been a
huge topic over the past few
year, most of it has to deal
with the connection of how
video games cause people
to become violent. This
graph shows the just how
prominent videogames are
in America.

Do we really need a Rating System?

Based on the study we concluded that a rating
system is not necessary, rather educating the
parents who purchase games for their kids
should be a priority.
Many parents arent aware of the rating
system, or often older siblings purchase
games for themselves causing smaller
kids to get their hands on games like CoD
or Battlefield when they are meant for
teens older than 17.
