Avengers Age of Ultron Smashes

Dont get me wrong. Age of Ultron is a whole

summer of fireworks packed into one movie.
It doesnt just go to 11, it starts there. But its
best when Whedon sins against the Hollywood
commandment of playing it safe. He takes a
few wrong turns, creating a jumble when the
action gets too thick. But he recovers like a
pro, devising a spectacle thats epic in every
sense of the word.
What do you need to know? That Tony Stark/
Iron Man (quipmaster Robert Downey Jr.)
has fucked up, big-time. His peacekeeping
program, Ultron, has become a robotic force
of artificial intelligence (motion-captured
and voiced with honey and malice by James
Spader) intent on destroying every human on
the planet. That cant happen, so cue Team
Avengers, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth)
and Captain America (Chris Evans) for hammer-and-shield showmanship; Hulk (a superb
Mark Ruffalo) for tempering rage with sexual
healing from Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson); and, best of all, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) for a startling backstory that Renner imbues with exhilarating humor and emotional
heft.
Joss Whedon Secrets of Avengers: Age of
Ultron: Joss Whedon Tells All
For added spice, Whedon brings on the newbies. Theres the twins, Quicksilver (Aaron
Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth

Olsen). Someone points out that hes fast and

shes weird. That aint the half of it. When
Whedon and his FX team send the twins fictional Eastern European country into orbit,
youll see why. Still, no one steals scenes from
Ultron, except the Vision, an android played
with touching gravity by Paul Bettany, who
previously voiced Iron Mans A.I. confidant
J.A.R.V.I.S. and who reps the films moral conundrum.
Wait, what? Moral conundrum? What kind
of escapism is this? IMO, its the best kind,
the kind that sticks with you. Whedon is the
true master of the Marvel Comic universe onscreen. He wont be back when Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 and Part 2 start shooting next
year. The Russo brothers will take the helm.
That makes Age of Ultron Whedons last
Avengers hurrah. And the monumental battle
between gods and monsters that he stages to
end the film does him proud. Bravo.

Furious 7 Franchise
Continues to Roar
Home Hits Home!

Massive writedowns. Failed sales. Deep

staffing cuts.
Its a trifecta of troubles that has left DreamWorks Animation struggling to find its footing
and move forward after the worst year and a
half in its often rocky history.
The companys suffering wont be alleviated
when Home, its upcoming alien invasion
film, lands on Friday. The picture is on track to
open to between $30 million and $35 million,
a respectable result but for the fact that it also
carries a $130 million pricetag.
Home opened to strong numbers overseas
last week, leading some analysts to predict
that the film should end up with more than
$100 million domestically and roughly $380
million globally.
They would skirt the writedown and be out
of a deficit situation with those numbers, said
David Miller, an analyst with Topeka Capital
Markets.

Family Film Meets Mark

We have become a little bit more concerned

that Home could underperform expectations,
even though they were not overly high, said
Tuna Amobi, an analyst with S&P Capital IQ.
The company could be hard-pressed to recoup its initial investment.
If Home can break even or turn a profit, it
will be a better showing than DreamWorks
achieved on three of its four most recent films
Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Turbo and
Penguins of Madagascar all ended up in the
red. At the same time, the companys stock
was buffeted after possible sales to Hasbro
and Softbank fizzled.
DreamWorks Animation declined to comment
on this article.
Film flops left the company in a deep financial
hole, with the company reporting $300 million
in operating losses last year. In order to climb
out, DreamWorks is scaling down the number
of films it fields annually from three to two.
Thats left Home aslease this year, intensifying the scrutiny that surrounds its performanats going to be anything that changes that,
said Mast with next Madagascar for them.

In a recent interview in Variety, Vin Diesel

predicted that Furious 7 would win the best
picture Oscar at next years Academy Awards.
Unless the Oscars dont want to be relevant ever, he added, though that issue may
already be settled. If Mr. Diesels prophecy
doesnt come true, it wont necessarily be
a matter of merit. Movies much worse than
this lucky-number episode of an overachieving franchise movies far less sure of their
intentions, sincere in their themes or kind to
their audiences have snapped up statuettes.
There will no doubt be better movies released
in 2015, but Furious 7 is an early favorite to
win the prize for most picture.

Furious 7 (With Movie Trailer): James Wan
Discusses Paul Walker and Narrates a Scene
Here is a movie with room for not one but
two ruthless supervillains: a snarling pit bull
played by Jason Statham and a terrorist mastermind played by Djimon Hounsou. Mr.
Statham participates in an early, glass-shattering smackdown with Dwayne Johnson and a
climactic, asphalt-shattering donnybrook with
Mr. Diesel. And thats not all. That is as far
from all as Tokyo is from Abu Dhabi, or Azerbaijan from Los Angeles, to the horror master
James Wan, pops its clutch and taps its brakes.

Paul Walkers Legacy

There is much too much plot in any case, and
a little too much heavy weaponry for my taste.
Like Dom, I prefer fisticuffs and car chases to
apocalyptic computer-generated explosions,
but I must admit that some of the digital stunts
hit the sweet spot of wacky, oh-no-they-didnt
sublimity. Cars are driven out of airplanes.
They soar between skyscrapers. They hurtle
over cliffs. Nearly everything that happens
is the visual punch line to a joke with a very
simple set up. Cars cant fly, Brian says to
his son. How many ways can dad be proven
wrong?
But viewers of Furious 7 will experience
a melancholy, earthward tug whenever Mr.
Walker, who died in 2013, appears on screen.
Filming was not complete when he died in a
car accident, and his brothers, Cody and Caleb, and another actor, John Brotherton, filled
in during some scenes. Mr. Wan also relied
on his special-effects experience to finish the
movie without Mr. Walker. The final moments,
when Mr. Walkers longtime colleagues say
their farewells while he still appears to be on
screen with them, are both awkward and moving.
