Rationale: Students will revisit and explore previously learned addition strategies to solve problems involving three digit numbers. They will
learn that there are a variety of ways to solve three-digit numbers.

Objectives:

TSW use a variety of addition strategies to solve word problems involving three-digit numbers.

Lesson Plan:

Introduction: Using the ELMO present a word problem to the students with two-digit numbers. Read the problem
together and ask if we need to add or subtract.
Process:
Information Giving:
When the students answer the problem requires us to add, ask how they know. What should we do before we solve. Remind the
students to use KVSF.

K- know, what do we know

V-visualize

S-Solve

F- Find the answer using the question. (write in a complete sentence)

Review each of the previously learned strategies and ask if that was the strategy used. Take a tally and see which strategy was used
the most and then ask why it was the most used strategy. When reviewing the different strategies make sure to explain regrouping
and why it is done. When you regroup or carry you are moving groups of ten. (Ten ones is equal to one ten, ten tens is equal to one
hundred.)

Modeling:
Using the same word problem exchange the two-digit numbers with three-digit numbers. Then ask if you could use the expanded form
strategy to get the sum and model how. Go through each strategy learned and model those that work with three-digit numbers. Ask
why or why not the strategy works.
Check for Understanding:

Why do you think we give you multiple strategies to solve addition problems?
When do we regroup?
What would be a good method of checking to see if your answer is correct?

Guided Practice:
Explain to students that will practice solving three digit numbers by using different addition strategies. And we will do this by playing
Around the world

Split students up into groups of 3 to 4

Each group will be given a hot air balloon, this is how you travel

There will be a different destination s to reach to make it around the world

To get to a new destination you must correctly answer the corresponding word problem.

Word problems will be located around the room and labeled with a destination; the travel card (word problem) will tell
students the direction of travel.

Each group will have a starting point and that is where your hot air balloon will be placed, as you solve problems you will move
your hot air balloon. When your balloon has traveled back to the starting point you have won.

As the students work through the problems they will need to show their work on their travel plan sheet.
As a class we will work through the first word problem using the KVSF and randomly choosing a strategy to add. Once the
problem is solved each group will get a starting mark.
Independent Practice:
The students will continue the game and filling out their travel plan sheet.
Closure/Culminating Activity:
As an exit ticket the students will explain how they like to solve addition problems and which strategy is most helpful.

Enrichment/Extension:

The students will create word/story problems for classmates to practice during problem solving time.
Play Race To 1000
o 1. Each player draws 6 cards
o 2. Using the 6 cards to create two 3 digit numbers in an addition problem. Your goal is to get the sum as
close to 1000 as you can.
o 3. The player whose addition problem has a sum closest to 100 wins the round.
o 4. Play six rounds. The player who wins the most rounds wins the game.

Accommodations:
1.

2.

(for a child with special needs) Will use visual and gesture cues to keep student on task and focused. Will give frequent reminders of
the task required to sustain motivation and focus.
(for a student that is an ELL) Allow additional wait time. Ask frequent questions and ask for understanding.

Assessment/Evaluation:

During Around the World I will observe how the students are using the addition strategies to solve word problems.
The Travel Plan Sheet will be assessed on how accurately the students are able to solve addition problems.
