    After this lesson the students should be able to:
    1. Identify when they need to wash their hands.
    2. How to wash their hands properly and for the appropriate amount of time by
    singing the "Happy Birthday" song.
    3. During the movement portion of the song the children will follow simple
    directions, give others enough personal space and do this safely.
    Resources/Materials Needed: (What resources will the teachers and the children

    The teacher will use a video from Youtube.com called "Washy, Washy, Clean."
    Book - Germs Make Me Sick!
    Coloring page
    Talcum powder
    Soap
    Water
    Strategies: (How will the teacher engage the children? What activities will the children
    complete? Indicate the teacher questions/prompts, expected child action, and the

    Discuss with children when we use our hands


    Watch a child friendly video on the steps to hand washing and pretend to wash
    our hands.
    Use fine motor skills and gross motor skills along with the hand washing video as
    they are demonstrated.
    Read book and discuss pictures in the book about "Germs."
    Children will be asked when to wash their hands.
    The teacher will engage the children by "sneezing" into hand and saying offering
    an open discussion on how the powder simulates a sneeze.
    Ask children when and where do they think they can pick up germs on their
    hands?
    Teacher will off talcum powder to each child and have them shake each other's
    hands. They will also notice they will get the "Germs" on other things like their
    clothes.
    The children will "grossed" out how germs spread and want to wash the talcum
    powder off their hands.
    The children will practice using the 8 steps to hand washing while being
    observed.
    Adaptation for Learner Diversity: (How can this lesson be adapted or structured for
    children with special needs or different age groups?)
    If a child is allergic to talcum powder then an alternative use would be glitter.
    Show children how to wash hands without soap and water but with friction.
    Offer the lesson plan in a their language.
    Assessment: (How will you determine the extent to which the children grasped the
    concept?)
    Observe the children:
    1. If they are washing their hands at appropriate times.
    1. Are they going through all 8 steps correctly
    2. Did they wash their hands for the appropriate amount of time by singing the "Happy
    Birthday" song.
    Optional Analysis/Reflection: (How well did this lesson work? Would you change
    anything next time?)
    The children loved it. I would perform this outside in warm weather instead of cold.
