Night Vision Technology in Automobile

This document discusses night vision technology used in automobiles. It begins with an introduction describing how night vision systems use infrared light to increase a driver's visibility beyond the reach of headlights. It then covers the principles of active illumination imaging and thermal imaging. The document describes how night vision systems work, highlighting potential hazards for drivers to react to. It also discusses the advantages of reducing accidents and having a greater range, as well as the disadvantages of higher costs and needing large sensors. Applications in Audi and BMW using thermal imaging and Mercedes-Benz using active illumination are mentioned. The conclusion states that night vision systems can have a great impact on saving lives by reducing accidents at night.

INTRODUCTION
It is a system to increase a vehicle driver's visibility in
darkness or poor weather beyond the reach of the vehicle's
headlights.
In this system Light waves [infrared (IR) ] are emitted by
source ; a special cameras.
collect small amounts reflected light and amplify it to
generate display on cluster.
These system are currently offered as optional equipment
on certain premium vehicles.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Night Vision Technology in Automobile Works on
two Phenomenon's.
1)Active Illumination
Imaging

2)Thermal

ACTIVE ILLUMINATION
This system can detect pedestrians up to four times
farther than the typical headlight range even in
penetrating dense smoke.
It actively detects people near the roadway,
highlighting potential hazards and allowing drivers to
have more time to react to them.
Its high beam illumination warns the pedestrians as
well.

THERMAL IMAGING
Thermal imaging is a heat-sensing technology that
can see in complete darkness using temperature
difference.
Electrical impulses are sent in the form of
temperature values to an image signal processor that
turns them into video data for presentation on a
display.

CAR WITH NVS MECHANISM

WORKING
Systems use an LCD that's mounted on the
dash, in the instrument cluster, or integrated
into the head unit.
The front thermographic sensors detects the
heat and processes the thermograms to display
images on LCD.
The IR sensor attached in vehicle's grille
illuminates very high beam.

REPRESENTATION

ADVANTAGES OF NVS
Reduce Accidents
Greater Range of About 300meters or 1000 feet.
Can be Switched ON/OFF and doesnt effect the
driver Style.
Works in almost every weather conditions.

DISADVANTAGES OF
NVS
Higher cost of process.
Large quantity of costly and complex equipment .
Works very poor in warm weather conditions.
Large sensors are required .

FUTURE SCOPE
Vision System + GPS Navigation = Driverless vehicle

CONCLUSION
The innovation and implementation
of night vision system has a great
impact on automotive session such as
saving many lives from death reducing
accidents at night.
