Title: Map of Polygons

Date: Spring 2015


Artifact Description:
The following artifact is a map I made for my students to help visualize the
similarities and differences of polygons. This experience was with my 3rd grade math
class during student teaching at The Wheatlands.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
I believe that this experience best aligns with standard four of the Wisconsin
Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: The teacher understands
and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to
encourage students development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance
skills. This experience aligns with standard four because I created a visual map for the
students. It showed the connections to the shapes as well as what attributes are the same.
We discussed the map a lot of the overhead, drew arrows to show connections and listed
more attributes. After we discussed the map we practiced recalling the information. I
gave the children a blank map and they were to create the map from memory. Together
we highlighted attributes that were the same and made connections. Each day we
reinforced what we had learned previously and students grasped the concept, which was
proven as a result of their test scores.

I believe that this experience best aligns with KS1.D. Demonstrates Knowledge
Of Resources which states: The candidate actively seeks materials and resources to
enhance instruction by utilizing school and district resources as well as other resources
available outside the school/district. I believe it best algins with KS1.D. because when
looking through my lessons for that week I knew my kids werent going to be able to
make that connection with the map that was in the math workbook. I utilized the
workbook and a few other resources I found, to make a map for the childrens need. The
students were able to point, draw lines, highlight and connect ideas with the map I gave
them. I was also able to share this with my 3rd grade team to allow their students to
untilzie this map as well.

Reflection:
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that the schools textbooks dont always have the best materials for children to

learn. I used what I knew about my students and how they learn to come up with a better
tool to help them investigate this lesson. I learned that the tool I created worked with all
the students, showing that my students are visual learners. From this point on I have
taught every lesson differently because I know how to teach it in a way that the students
will be able to visualize and recall the information.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that it is important to have my different ways of connecting ideas for
children. I learned I can create tools that are just as beneficial to students as the books
tools. I also learned that by allowing my students to not only read my map but also create
their own helped many of the students store the information to be recalled. On the backs
of their tests many of the students had drawn the map out from memory to use to help
them with questions about polygons, which showed that this was a useful tool. This
experience made me realize that creating tools is fun, but also allowing the students to
help create the tool will benefit everyone. I plan to make more worksheets in the future to
fit my curriculum and to meet standards.
