Lesson 2

The 3rd period lesson focused on finishing factoring trinomials with leading coefficients and introducing difference of squares factoring. Students took a quiz on GCF and easy trinomial factoring before reviewing homework on hard trinomials. The teacher then presented difference of squares through a flipchart before students worked in groups of 4 on factoring problems, discussing answers to reach agreement and explain their reasoning. Homework assigned was a worksheet on difference of squares factoring.

3rd period:

3/26/2015
Lesson: finish up hard trinomials and start on difference of squares
SOL A.2:
c) Factoring completely first- and second-degree binomials and trinomials in one or
two variables. Graphing calculators will be used as a tool for factoring and for
confirming algebraic factorizations.
Objectives:

SWBAT:
o Factor trinomials with leading coefficients other than 1
o Recognize and factor difference of squares
o Understand and be able to identify the perfect squares from 1-15

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to wrap up the teaching of factoring

trinomials with a leading coefficient and introduce the concept of difference of
squares. By helping the students to see the connection between difference of
squares and trinomials they will discover a pattern that will lead to success in the
factoring of difference of squares.
Lesson Timeline:

Warm up & check homework:

o Homework check: hard trinomials WS
o Warm-up: one factoring GCF & one factoring easy trinomial problem
This will be a good review for their quiz to be taken immediately

following the warm-up

Quiz: GCF & easy trinomials
Go over hard trinomials homework
Difference of Squares flipchart
Factoring difference of squares group work
Groups of 4
Each student has a whiteboard and marker; there is then one

master whiteboard for the whole table

Each group will be given a stack of ten problems to work out
with their members and then agree upon a final answer they will

place on their master board and be able to explain

Homework: difference of squares WS
